$1:
The practice of serving rolls and sandwiches in the mess is to stop. A gentleman or lady uses a knife and fork,” he says.

I can just see it, a Brit in hand to hand combat with the enemy, bashing his head in with an entrenching tool or something while apologizing for being such a boor for not using the knife and fork in his mess kit.

No kidding. I thought that prima donna martinets like this were a thing of the past. The Brits might want to make sure their ghillie suits are all properly starched and ironed, too.

Go back to a steady diet of Bully Beef and Haricot Oxtail soup, served on the end of a bayonet.

I'm not a military man, but it appears this illustrates the wrongheadedness of reserving the higher ranks for people of "higher class" and not of "higher ability."

I thought that the British Army had left that behind, after the Somme.

I honestly don't know, but this is a bad sign

That would be funny if it weren't true...sounds like class still trumps fighting ability in the UK.

Maybe the Brits will start wearing bright red, march into battle in unison, and wait for the enemy to fire before returning fire. That will make things easier

The Brits had a right proper gent named Wavell who was not so popular with his troops after he jokingly made some boneheaded comment about how bayonet charges were useful in reducing the progenitors of the lower classes. It was bad enough his troops getting their butts kicked by the Germans, they also had to deal with wondering whose side their commander was on.

Overall, the man's career was stellar, make no mistake about that. But the one comment haunted him and contributed to his being removed from the field in 1943.

Can't remember the exact details without going through volumes of books I have but there was an incident not long after the Normandy landings in the Canadian sector. Think it was around Carpiquet airfield where the Canadians ran into a well fortified bunker. After a few attempts at destroying it a British Officer came to inquire about the hold up in progress. He dismissively told the Canadian CO that they would take care of it and gave the command to his own to "Bring up the Petard". The Petard rolled up within range of the bunker and was immediately vaporized. That Canadian Regiment eventually knocked it out but for the remainder of the war when they came to immoveable situations they would mockingly say "Bring up the Petard".
Silly colonials.........
