We haven't dined out for ages now so I haven't seen this for myself in restaurants but I can believe it.

We do have 2 places we order in from directly (Pizza place and Chinese food place) and we always pay cash and always tip the driver without concerning ourselves as to how that individual reports it or shares it.

I always tip in cash. I have no doubt 90% of the owners just pocket the tip and just make up figures to tell the staff, if they give them any at all.

Thing is, it's already not going very well in restaurants. Inflation and tipping expectations will continue to convince customers to stay at home.

I have a question for those who order in. Do you tip when you place the order and tip the delivery person too?

Restaurants have been running for so long on low profits, using tipping as the means to pay staff and bump up profit. Now the pandemic has made this obvious, they are going to have to find a better business model, and customers are going to find the true cost of eating out.

Most chefs in higher end joints work 60 hour weeks for minimum wage. A large portion of the staff works for no money. That isn't sustainable.

I have a question for those who order in. Do you tip when you place the order and tip the delivery person too?

No, I don't add the tip when placing the order. One place adds on a small delivery fee the other does not but I always get the total amount so that we have the cash ready. I've never thought about mentioning a tip when I call.

Perhaps people who use an actual delivery service (like skippy) might do that but I won't order from anyone who says I need a fucking app for it nor do I do it online. I phone the order in and the places we order from do their own delivery and both are about 5-10min away (same mall actually) so service is quick and always arrives hot. The delivery drivers use their own vehicles (noted when during the pandemic they didn't want to come into my building so we'd go down to get our food) and with gas, insurance being what they are I'm not too concerned if they share the tip or not. Besides, the pizza place knows us well and we always get a few extra chicken wings than what it's supposed to be.

This is why I get takeout almost exclusively now. I don't tip because there isn't actually anyone delivering my order. As far as I'm concerned, by paying the business's listed price I've given them everything I need to. I'm more than happy to tip delivery drivers when I order that way or my server when I dine in, but if I'm not actually dealing with a specific person that way I'm not going to tip the business "in general".

Entities like SkipTheDishes gouge the restaurants so bad anyway that I prefer to just pay them directly. They end up making more money anyway when I come in person.
