And I have never been in a school where extracurriculars were done during school hours.

It's the new thing.

Nothing is like it was when we were in school. Teachers aren't there until 4:30 or 5:00 every day (after arriving at 7:30 or 8:00), the school hours are WAY shorter, curriculums are no where near as challenging, and the workload is almost nil. Parents also don't parent near as much anymore, making it near impossible for the dedicated teachers out there to actually do their jobs, never mind do it effectively. The entire system has gone for shit.

Welcome to the coddled generation. Unfortunately, we're the ones that are going to pay dearly for it because those lazy little farts are the ones who will be in charge soon.

God help us.

We'll, I can only speak to my experience . I retired 7 years ago. The school my granddaughter goes to (Catholic. French) is very good.

French school. That makes a HUGE difference. The Francophone and French Immersion students do exceptionally well compared to the regular public schools here. Parents tend to be far more hands on, teachers more support, a higher success rate, AND are more willing to go the extra mile. (You get what you give and all that stuff). The regular public schools... not so much. The above is the norm.

The school I taught in did extra curriculars after school. The gym was busy till 8 or 9 at night with various teams, younger students starting earlier and older later.

Never happens around here nor was that the case when I was in school.

fifeboy fifeboy:
Easy to complain constantly, eh! Makes it sound like your getting something done.

Coming from a teacher, that's dripping with irony.

Baseball practice coached by parents, volleyball in the school gym, coached by parents, gymnastics in the College gym, paid trainer, volunteer parents...

Yeah, not here either... At least not with teachers volunteering.

We just wanted her to learn Canada's official languages. I didn't and regret it.

School bus drivers are complaining ? I am no longer a teacher . Thirty years of long hours and listening to complaints from the public finally overpowered the fun of teaching ,

Interesting report on the CBC about BC public schools. Teachers are paid about 20% less and have a class size if 10 - 15. When the interviewed striking and teachers and asked them about taking a 20% pay cut for half the class size and workload! all of them said no! but they would lower their wage demands.

Yeah...it's not about the money. :P

30 years as a teacher. No need to insult your own intelligence pretending to be obtuse. You know what I'm saying.

Oh absolutely. I think that's a fantastic choice. I wish it had been available to my boys.
I can only blame myself for not learning it. I grew up surrounded by frenchmen, but refused to speak it right from a wee tyke. Now I wish I hadn't been such a stubborn child.

None of the activities at our local school run past 4-4:30. Our most recent event, track and field, happened during school hours.

Our largest fundraiser of the year, the one that drives 75% of extra funds in the school was run by 24 parents and 2 teachers.
