The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea governs which nations exert what kinds of controls over their surrounding waters. In addition to the 22-kilometre territorial waters and the 370-kilometre exclusive economic zones, coastal countries are allowed to claim additional sea floor if they can show their continental shelf extends beyond the economic zone.

Under the UN Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), if the tectonic plate the land is on is part of our territory, it's undisputed that it's part of our country. Defence is not necessary.

We had 10 years from ratification to file our territorial claim, and that is nearly up. That's what all the Coast Guard ships have been doing - mapping the arctic to stake our claims.

Now we'll see who is willing to put up or shut up.

Some people denigrate the UN just because of those initials, "U" and "N". Whereas, I've always been able to distinguish between the dysfunctional Security Council; the comical General Assembly, and look toward things that actually make a difference in the world that they do very well. Like the UN Diplomatic Conference, the ICC, WHO or UNICEF.

The Convention on the High Seas was put forth in 1958, and has been nothing but good. But it's never in the news, and if it's in the news it's usually bad news, so people have no ill feelings toward that part of the UN.
