Thanos Thanos: People go in droves to see the geriatrics because the young ones aren't making a single thing worth listening to. Rock 'n' roll got killed by the pop-sluts. And the new ones pretending to be the heirs apparent couldn't even fill the spandex tights of the worst and most obnoxious of the '80's glam-metal bands. at the 80's reference. I do agree with you on this. I think it's pretty amazing of how many of those "geriatric" bands are still together and performing considering the lifestyle many of them have led.

Although there are some, there are very few new rock bands these days. Kids have taken the swing towards Country in a big way of late. Manufactured pop music and country are driving radio these days.

Manufactured pop music and country are driving radio these days. I can't even listen to 'Pop' radio anymore. Waiting for a good song to come on is like torture, having to listen to all the crap they play in between. And I can't listen to 'oldies' radio, because that's what I listen to when I'm not listening to the radio! And the DJs tend to be complete idiots. So, I listen to CBC Radio One.

I remember driving my U-Haul back to Canada and coming within range of CBC 1 - really knew I was coming home then. But it sure has gone downhill since morningside with GZowski, and even as it happens. Or radio dramas. Driving down from Kamloops listening to "the brain" - great fun. The highlight to me was when Barbara Frum got Idi Amin on the line. OR earlier yet, living in Prince Rupert, listening to the Goon Show from BBC, or classical Music.

There are still some pretty decent shows. 'The Vinyl Cafe', 'Spark', 'DNTO', 'This is That', 'The Debaters' - all interest me, crack me up or make me think. Last week on 'Rewind' they had an interview from 1963 with Dr. Martin Luther King that was very prescient.

These days I only listen in the car, and I don't drive much. I like this is that, irrelevant show, debaters, that show about advertising. Also sat morning the house can be interesting, and Enright's how on Sundays sometimes has good stuff. Still, a pale reflection of the glory days.

Tons of cool music out there. You need to have an ear to the ground though. I love AC/DC, although I also th9ink they;'ve been a cover band since Back in Black, writing the same album over again 15 times. Still, as far as rock'n'roll goes, they have Integrity witha capital "I." Malcom Young--hope you get well soon buddy. Must be pretty bad if he can't play--playing rhythm guitar for AC/DC is the easiest gig in the business. ha ha ha. Joking, Malcolm--all the best.

Nope. Been avoiding the radio for years now. Strangely enough there's a small radio station broadcasting out of Okotoks south of Calgary that plays some pretty good stuff throughout the day. Whereas the so-called "classic" rock station in Calgary was playing Welcome To The Jungle for about the 48 millionth fucking time (and once again ignoring about a dozen other much better GNR tunes they could have played), these guys in Okotoks were cuing up Uriah Heep's The Wizard and Hawkwind's Silver Machine. Our "alternative" station out here is just as bad. When they started they had their campaign of "no old crap" and declared themselves a "Pink Floyd and Zepplin-free zone". Then they fired up Smells Like Teen Spirit and Pearl Jam's Jeremy, with both songs being about seventeen years old at the time. Oooooooooh, "alternative". Got a Sync system in the truck and a 32 GB flash drive with about 3000 songs on it in the glove box. The reliable old Microsoft Zune with about 5000 songs on it is hooked up to the home stereo and ready to go anytime I sit down to do some model-building/drinking. Right now I'm about as radio-free as a person can get, thank fuck, and I intend to stay that way for as long as I can. Sirius can go fuck themselves too because I'm not paying a penny of my money towards the salaries of assholes like Howard Stern or Artie Lange either. Pop culture from which there is no escape? Ha-ha! They can all fucking bite me.

You've just named 4 new bands that have a sound I love. I haven't heard of the Red Sparrows but I think I'll look them up.

But I'm too old now and don't feel like trying anymore! I was always more of a full-album guy. I probably had most of those Rush/Zeppelin/U2/etc albums memorized from start-to-finish from obsessively playing them over and over and over again. The newer ones like Black Keys/Wolfmother/Sheepdogs can toss out some very good singles but most of their albums are just filler material. They can touch what made the older bands great but they're really not capable of pushing past the surface.

2Cdo 2Cdo: You've just named 4 new bands that have a sound I love. I haven't heard of the Red Sparrows but I think I'll look them up. Red Sparowes is all instrumental, so be warned. I'm in a kind of cool classic rock band right now. We play all newer bands that sound like classic rock. The ones above (not Tool though--it takes months to learn their songs and good luck finding a drummer that can handle those chops). Plus Sheepdogs, Black Keys. I like the Wolfmother best--my voice sounds exactly like that guy's.

Some good suggestions, also, if you wanna rock, check out CLUTCH. Their Blast Tyrant album and any album newer than that. Anything older than Blast Tyrant is a bit of an acquired taste... ...also, if you like it (and you will) those albums can be played front to back. No song needs to be skipped. Well main stream rock is dead or at the very least taking an extended break for a while. Its all electronic dance music now. North American resisted the wave for quite a bit while it took over Europe and many other places but its seems its landed now.
But not really a bad thing. Some very creative artists are blending genres now, like Avicii who has successfully mixed EDM with bluegrass/country. Introducing it to whole new set of fans and generation.
