I think it's funny that the Home Reno rebate will be quashed by a 'no-confidence' vote. I'm in line for that and a CRA rebate for extensive reno's, I'll vote Tory anyway but the guy next door to me is a life-long Lib, he's livid as he spent 10K and is counting on $1300 back on his taxes.

Talk about electoral suicide!
Force a vote and force it on this!

I thought Iggy was smarter than this, he's making Harper look clever without Harper having to do anything!

According to the CRA they are operating as if it were law already so I don't think an election will quash it regardless of who wins. If Harper wins then its business as usual for the home reno credit and if Iggy wins he has no reason not to honour it since it would screw his popularity.

It's an area of exploitable concern though derby, this is a gift to the Tories.
If I was the Libs I'd get a few 'radicals' to ensure this passes and do the 'no confidence' on something more electorally palatable.

It still has to be formally approved by Parliament prior to the 2009 tax year filing. This credit being 'seen' to be in jeopardy now is an easy sell to the public and great attack ad fodder.
Short sound bites......"Iggy voted AGAINST the home reno credit.."

Do you guys really want to make it that easy for Harper? Apparently so.

You might find that legally the CRA must honour the reno credit seeing as its been plastered over their web page for months now.

In fact I thought it was already passed back during the original stimulus budget.

Lets not forget that Harpers playing games by putting it on the chopping block and is just as guilty of threatening the credit. He knows that the Libs won't support him anymore so he decides to make the reno credit part of any confidence motion hoping for the very anger you post about.

Its my guess that even if Harper claims the reno credit will get axed by losing a confidence motion Iggy will likely include honouring it in his campaign. I also believe that the CRA will honour the credit either way under the same laws that make businesses honour the things they advertise about.

Of course it will be political games that this reno credit will be on the table for parliamentary assent. Is there any other kind of politics in Canada at this moment?

The reno tax has been on the 'way and means' portion of the agenda since the last sitting and it's tatically bad for the Libs to miss that rather 'shiny' bill.

I'm sure Iggy can promise to bring it back if, and that's if he gets in but it's a gift to the Tories if he votes against it.

You know the electorate 'aint clever derby. This will be an easy sell for the Tories to show Iggy in a bad light, delaying funds for infrastructure and killing the reno tax.

Whichever way you look at it, this election will slow the business of governing Canada down and take 4-6 weeks away from parliament doing it's job during these tough economic times.

I'm not going partisan here as I'm well aware that Harper is exploiting the situation to purely stay in power.

But look at the optics and how easy this will be to sell to the masses.
This is the best outcome for the Tories and I think it's a mis-step by Iggy. A fall election will only benefit the Tories in these circumstances.

It will be another minority Tory government, Iggy will be tossed and Bob Rae will be your new leader.

I've got my sign all ready out of the garage! I'm into recycling so I saved it after the last vote thinking I'd need it again soon.

The opposition will support the Reno Tax Credit but will hold a no-confidence vote on their opposition day

All I can say is that the same things were said about the last election also and Harper wasn't punished for calling that one. I think the same thing will happen again. The voters who will hold the Libs accountable wouldn't vote Lib anyway.

For a Liberal/Iggy position only a loss as bad as Dion will be a true loss. A greatly reduced Con minority will be disappointing but it will be also be a building block for Iggy and the NDP will still hate Harper's CPC meaning the odds of them dealing with Iggy is much higher.

Remember that Harper lost his first election also but built on it.

I like the analysis at http://threehundredeight.blogspot.com/ It deals with questions just like you posted about.

I just heard Jack Layton on CKNW radio, I found it a bit surprising that he didn't show any hostility towards the Liberals, he never even mentioned them or Ignatieff. Even though the host brought them up several times. Compared to the pre-election time last year Layton was actively attacking the Liberals.

That's funny cause I heard Thomas Mulcair on a Quebec City radio station. I did not listen to the whole thing though. From the bits heard, pretty much was saying that they are only looking out for the population's interest. So in politician terminology, that pretty much means they want your vote.
