Bodah Bodah:
There are no Francophones in Pankenham, the few that are speak fluent english. If people expect anglos that live in Quebec to speak french, the same should apply for Francos living in Ontario.

Give this women her job back, language nazis.

BTW people don't respect another persons language very well by having it forced down their throats when there's no reason to.

Hmm.. Francos in Ontario do speak french :)

There are two official languages in the country. And the feds have an obligation to provide servies in both languages no matter what. The fact that someone speaks one or the other is irrelivant. I speak both, but if I go into a post office or other government facility I have the right to speak either. In this case the government should have an obligation to allow this person to learn french. In any case she should not lose her job.. they should provide a person who is bilingual to work there..

Brenda: Well true but most Europeans know more than their native language, at least from my experience. And considering the proximity of Germany and France, I'd guess that those are 2 of the other 3 you know?

And sure the world changes, and I just KNEW someone was going to mention that. The world changes technologically, and if you don't update your knowledge, you get left behind. But living in a city that had more Italians, Ukrainians, Vietnamese and East Indians than French, it seems pointless it should have even been an issue.

On a bit of a side note, there were a lot of French heritaged people living there, but the ones I knew and was friends with, and there were lots of 'em, I spoke more french they did. Many of them had even taken to pronouncing their last names in an Anglified form.

I suppose that I could wander into a Post Office somewhere on the Gaspe Pennisula and be served by someone in perfect English huh? I fucking doubt that LARGE.

The Contingent CWO the last roto I was on was a Franco Combat Engineer, he BARELY spoke 3 words of English, and would not converse with anybody who was Anglo. How the fuck does a guy get that Snr appointment?

Haha, yep :)
IMO, it is pointless that EVERYONE working at Canada Post should speak 2 languages. If you have more than 1 empolyee, if each of those speak the other language, problem solved...

On the other hand, I do not see the need why the English should be speaking french in a store/postoffice, or the french speaking english, especially when both languages are spoken in the area. You won't find anyone here who speaks french. Italian, yes, but french? I doubt it
I think I am going to ask the ladies at the post office here if they are bi-lingual :)

SAY WHAT???????

Pakenham's street signs are bilingual...just like Hawkesbury's.

Little research before posting maybe??

Canada posts is a FEDERAL branch, and therefore bilingual service is MANDATORY! All she has to do is either learn french or apply for a burger flipper job.

So what kind of Bloc Québécois supporter are you ? The separatist kind ? Or the kind that supports a party whose only interests is that of Quebec, while milking as much as they can out of the rest of us ?

I think you need to do some research, what does bilingual signs in the area have to do with the fact that 99% of the residents are english, and the remaining are fluent in english. Bilingualism where numbers warrant is the key here. In this case I don't see it being warranted. After 6 years with no complaint all of a sudden its a problem. You language nazis keep at it, I'm sure it will foster great relations between the english & french.

If it hasn't changed since I was in, the language points on your PER were only a small percentage of the overall score. Therefore you could still be promoted without speaking both official languages.

But I do agree with you that some Snr Appointments should only be given to bilingual personnel. When they put him in that position and he was unable, or unwilling to speak to his people, it should have been apparent and he should have been replaced. So the onus is more on the system than on this individual.

I imagine I'd have had the same problems if I'd been posted to the Ville De Quebec, but at least I'd have found some way to converse with the troops, because there's nothing worse than being led by someone who's either incompetent or completely indifferent.

We had a CPO2 who spoke 'fluent' English, but his accent was so thick(He made Chretien sound like fucking Shakespeare) that he often needed to repeat himself or have someone explain what exactly it was that he said. I remember going to 6 Mile House for lunch with him and a few others. The waiter had to get him to write his order out.

Good question, considering the Sgt. or higher rank "has to be bilingual" policy came into effect.

ROTFL

Been there done that. The funny part is that I knew numerous Francophones who after living on the West Coast for years actually forgot how to speak French. There were even a couple of them who tried to get their language profile changed to English, but nobody would believe them.
