PublicAnimalNo9 PublicAnimalNo9: What sickens me is they can't even be honest about why they are increasing their prices. Seriously, are they telling us that a 10-25 cent decrease in a bottle of booze/wine is going to encourage heavier drinking and impaired driving? And this is their excuse for actually raising the overall price instead of just adjusting it for the decrease.
I remember when politicians and gov't organs put some imagination in their bullshit stories. Now, it's like they don't even try. If people are that fucked up, they'll get there alcohol from other sources than what the liquor store provides.

Personally, I could care less cuz I don't drink I just find great irony in McSquinty hoping that business will pass the savings onto the consumer(they won't, and he knows it) and then a gov't organ jacks up THEIR prices ASAP.

Look at the areas will HST will hit you the most, gasoline, electricity, natural gas and heating fuel, internet access, etc. Do you see Hydro One, Union Gas, Petro Canada (or any gas station), Bell passing on ANY savings to the consumer? Most we can hope for is a temporary stay of consistent price increases. He must think we are all stupid. I loathe McGuinty.

Oh get over it, guys. The price YOU pay for booze isn't going up.
HST will mean the province's 12% alcohol tax will effectively be lowered to 8% with the HST comes in and the LCBO (not McGuinty) decided that made booze too cheap and contradicted their policy of "socially responsible" pricing. So the increase will make up for any potential savings. Some specific products may incidentally end up being increased by like 5 or 10 cents or some other insignificant amount as a result of a uniform pricing policy across product lines, but there will no bigger hit to your pocketbook as a result.
So now people are bent out of shape that they aren't going to get some kind of incidnetal 'windfall benefit' from HST and have unexpectedly cheaper booze. Talk about a culture of entitlement! Maybe they think booze should be free? Or maybe the province should pay them to get drunk?
Again, it appears that this is an internal LCBO decision, not a McGuinty or Liberal decision.
I'm not a fan of HST because its a pander to the business community and doesn't do much for people. Its not a 'left wing' tactic, its a pro-business tactic.
With repect to privatizing the LCBO, its one of the most lucrative government enterprises and it INJECTS over $1 BILLION into public coffers after covering its own expenses. Where do people think that public revuenue shortfall will made up from if its sold off? If you don't want your taxes to go up further, you should support keeping the LCBO, OLGC and other money-making government operations.

BeaverFever BeaverFever: Oh get over it, guys. The price YOU pay for booze isn't going up. Reading the article helps. $1: Wine and liquor prices are expected to rise in July even though the business-friendly HST will actually lower tax rates on booze, the Star has learned. I don't buy much alcohol, but I just see it as one more thing I'm overcharged/overtaxed on. The list is long.

Lemmy Lemmy: saturn_656 saturn_656: I assume you know who owns and operates the LCBO? Owns, yes, operates, no. But this is an excellent time to re-open the privatization debate for the LCBO. That was a part of McGuinty's platform during his first run at premier. And Mike Harris's. The only difference is Dalton imposed the 'health care premuim' in 2005 which means my wife and I pay about $2000 extra tax a year. The HST means we will be paying about $3000 more tax a year with our 'after-tax' wages foe EVERYTHING we buy. This means we will have less money to spend on everything else. A another really good move by the Ontario Liberals. I guess I'll carry on buying my camera gear in the US and flying out of Buffalo when I go on vacation.

Then you still have to pay taxes when you cross the border, and the funny thing is, you don't get the taxes paid in the US back. So you pay double... (sorry, just my $.02. I do NOT like the HST.)

Of all the things I've ordered from the U.S. It was a book that I finally had to pay tax on when it got here.

I bought two focus screens that are $29 US each and are $74 each (without taxes) at Henry's. Both with shipping were under $80 Can, and I got two for less than one at a Canadian retailer. When unfair taxes are levied, people will find ways to avoid them and the taxes will be self-defeating.

Doesnt matter if I am alone or with my whole family.

The Ontario crossings are a little busier. They can only do what they can do.

EyeBrock EyeBrock: The Ontario crossings are a little busier. They can only do what they can do. They have no problem with letting you wait an hour before they even start searching. They first have to drink coffee, smoke, see how long they can make the line-up of people waiting to get into Canada (or more, to get home...). AND they make you pay every dime you owe. They are such assholes here...
