BartSimpson BartSimpson: And, again, I do not understand in the least why so many leftish Canadians and Americans are in opposition to a North American missile defense that would take out missile strikes from a small country like NK. Well, that would be a step towards making the continent impervious to attack... and well that just isn't a good idea. Makes others "uncomfortable".

That's if it doesn't blow up over Bella Bella. Sorry, Bart, but really, you guys are the targets, not us. We just suffer through the ash clouds and fallout - while you guys become the glass parking lots.

Iran's next. NK will have to wait. And I'm sure that they're shivering in their l'il boots right now in light of the overwhelming success of the democracy-building exercises in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I know that this concept is probably heresy in right-wing war hawk circles, but even the United States is capable of fighting only so many wars at one time. Not that you'll ever hear it on FOX but unless they can deploy a military the size of the one they had in WW2, then kicking ass in Tehran and Pyongyang is probably a non-starter.

It's hardly the time to begrudge the non-existence of a missile defense program.
Right now is the time to politely ask around for who is "in" or not.
I'm think the US might be arriving late or without full force on this rodeo. Canada might show, and will definitely show if the US sends any force.
What about Japan and China?
Australia will probably pass after they were snubbed in the Iraq war.

What's sad/funny is that this is not true. Bill Clinton signed off on letting his buddies from Loral sell guidance tech to China who, in turn, sold it to NK and Iran so the NK and Iranian missiles are now more accurate than they used to be. I doubt that the Elvis impersonator in Pyongyang differentiates between the US & Canada. I guess the one upside of the North Koreans tossing a nuke at North America is that afterwards there won't be much debate about a missile defense.

Canada: out. Britain: out. Australia: out. Russia: why ever bother asking? South Korea: in, but only because they have no choice. Japan: out, unless they're directly attacked by NK first, and even then who knows after that. China: will not side with the Americans ever, especially if the US is going to attack one of their puppet neighbours. It'd be like 1951 all over again. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the Chinese solved everyone's problem permanently by assassinating Kim and putting someone less belligerent in charge.

I don't know Japan has a brand new army and I'm sure they've been itching to get into a good war for the past 30 years at least.

I'm not sure enough about Japan's current foreign policy postures to say which way they'd turn. I'm fairly certain though, that the Japanese population as a whole is not as easy to stampede into total hysteria as the population of the United States currently appears to be. I doubt that any military responses to NK will happen while Obama's in charge, but who really knows what will happen after 2012 if the neocons get back in charge. Let's see the possibilities for a peaceful life on Planet Earth in 2013. Add in the following individuals who are dedicated to making sure peace can't ever possibly happen: Netanyahu in Israel Ahmadinijad in Iran Kim in NK A Repulsican president like Palin in the United States There's a nice mellow world scene for you right there. Each one clearly a perfectly rational individual with the interest of the whole of humanity right in their hearts. Why don't we just launch everything at each other right now instead and just get it all over with sooner rather than later.

ind of figured it was North Korea right from the start. Hard to feel sorry sorry for South Korea though. I like Koreans--know a whole bunch of them. But seriously, that country needs to grow a pair.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada: P.S. Bart, I do not respect your attempt to scare Canadians into supporting the damn Missile program. And I have no respect for your opposition to a defensive program that the Russians have all over Russia. If it's okay with you that the Russians have a massive missile defense program I'm left to wonder why it is you oppose a US program that was designed to intercept no more than ten missiles.

But seriously, that country needs to grow a pair. It really couldn't have been anyone else, yeah. But I don't understand why you find it hard to feel sorry for South Korea? From what I know, they never crossed the line into North Korea's water. Sinking a warship is a declaration of war. Well, actually, they're still at war. But at some point South Korea needs to step up to the plate and stop all the hand-wringing exercises. If you don't fight back even when your military is being targetted, you don't deserve to survive, in my opinion.
