I'm thinking like this:

Everyone who commits a crime due to addiction is put in jail. In there they have access to the drug of choice in therapeutic doses.

They remain in jail getting free drugs until they decide they want to get out. To get out they must clean up for 6 months and take job training.

I suspect savings from the downturn in crime would easily pay for the drugs and be better off for us all.

:)

What about the people who don't use the drugs, but instead take advantage of the demand created by the people addicted to them, and the lack of supply created by the prohibition laws? They have no need for treatment, or therapeutic doses. What you're talking about sounds like a strange version of Insite. Once addicts have access to a therapeutic dose, what good does it do to imprison them? At that point they aren't doing harm to anyone but themselves.

Finally!

Liberals oppose Bill S-10 as Conservatives hide mounting prison costs
$1:
OTTAWA - The Liberal Party of Canada announced today that it will oppose Bill S-10 over concerns that the bill disproportionately targets youth and would cause an explosion of costs to build new mega-prisons.

This bill isn’t tough on crime, it’s dumb on crime,” said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. “We’re all in favour of cracking down on serious criminals, but this bill doesn’t distinguish between massive grow-ops and a first-time offender with a small amount.

Great work Iggy. Thanks for listening to common sense.

Liberals announce opposition to Bill S-10!! - S-10 will be defeated

Liberals come out against Tory ‘dumb on crime’ legislation
$1:
The Liberals have had a change of heart on a key Conservative crime bill and now say they will vote against legislation that would impose mandatory minimum sentences on some drug offenders, including those caught with as few as six marijuana plants.

I'm all for decriminalising marijuana.

Those who use it should be more concerned about having skin (in later years) that looks like the leather seats in a 55 Cadillac.

They ripped off a grow-op and the Hells Angels shot them, therefore marijuana is dangerous and should be illegal.
And selling to schoolkids is outright evil. Therefore, completely ignoring the fact that schoolkids are selling it to other schoolkids not some unshaven 50 yr old in a raincoat hiding in the bushes in the schoolyard, it only follows that they raise them to adult court so schoolkids can face minimum sentences.
After all, the whole idea is to be as big an asshole as possible and pretend that has something to do with justice.
You obey laws out of fucking respect. When the law's been wrong for 50 fucking years you don't respect it anymore, and when some blockhead decides to make you respect it out of fear, you get rid of the asshole first and then the law.

I'm fairly certain that the Liberals are completely unserious about cracking down on violent crime. But the traditional Liberal perfidy doesn't make this new bill the right thing for the Tories to be pushing.

The Bill is a waste of time anyway. The Libs decrimmed pot once already, it's only a matter of time before they're in power again.

You know what..Simple possession I don't give a shit about..If you want to fry your brain that's fine! But if you decide to try to sell it to a kid then you are a menace and should go to jail. I don't give a rats arse what some folks may say about how harmless it is.

Exactly my opinion.

It may be harmless on the physiological sense (except the problems associated with the smoke). But, it's very harmful on the development of children and teenagers. It's a social problem. I'm from a rural place where almost everyone smokes pot once and a while but there are a large percentage of people smoking on a daily basis. I have many friends with that problem. The all dropped college/university except one. They play video games all day and get their welfare checks.

There's a difference between smoking a joint in a party sometimes and smoking everyday. Like most dependencies, the younger you begin, worst is the dependence and the quantity. Children begin smoking pot at 10-11-12 yo now. How can they think to achieve a successful career ?

The issue here isn't keeping weed out of the hands of children. It is far easier for anyone to get ahold of some weed because of the fact that it is illegal and thus dealers don't ask for ID. If anyone wants a drug badly enough and has the means to acquire it, they will do so. It does not matter what the law says.

Having said that... yes, it is bad for developing children to consume weed in pretty much any method or capacity. I wouldn't even recommend trying it until the early 20s.

But back to the issue. This bill proposes to put people in prison for minor possession of some matter from a plant that grows everywhere on this planet, and has been proven to be less harmful than pretty much every other vice and party drug in existence. This bill isn't going to reduce crime, it's just going to cost us all more to keep more people in more prisons for made-up crimes.
