Weren't we all saying about 50 years ago that eventually, technology would replace people and do all those crappy jobs that people don't want to do. :?

Not just crappy jobs, as in low paid. Tech is also expected to replace a lot of middle class jobs.

What we haven't answered is what do we do with all the people replaced by tech?

"We" won't make that decision. The machines will.

Freakinoldguy Freakinoldguy:
It doesn't matter if they raise the minimum wage, lower it or leave it just the same. The reality is that humans can't compete with technology when it comes to cost so, these companies are going shift service to the kiosk model no matter what we think or want and in 20 years the people staring blankly into the colourful screen waiting to order their food won't ever remember a time when some nice College Graduate used to ask if you "wanted fries with that".

You can already see that. Kids who were always taken to McDs or Wendys never saw how a waiter/waitress works, what they do, the steps you take. So trainees for other establishments are next to fucking useless. Not so much as a clue as what to do unless they're told every step of the way and don't really give a shit as soon as the boss's back is turned.
Failed to learn the basic concept that the wage is just where you start, the tips are where the real money's at.

The schadenfreude is delicious today!

The jerks who thought they were going to get $15 an hour for asking, "Izzat for here-er-togo?" are now going to get NOTHING.

Serves them right.

$1:
as minimum wage hikes and a tight labor market push up wages.
what is wrong with this picture? So if only those non-existent worker would accept a lower wage, all would be golden?

Canadian Tire has, or had, some kind of a program for their younger workers where they'd match the employees contribution to some kind of a college fund. They did this because they recognized that type of retail work wasn't something to sustain a person through life, especially after they started a family. Not sure if the junk food places do the same kind of thing but it would be responsible corporate citizenship if they did the same for their own workers to help them eventually move onto something better.

The self-serve kiosks don't get paid at all. They don't sue you for sexual harassment, they don't file false worker's comp claims, you don't have to pay their payroll taxes, they don't steal from the cash register, they don't steal your customer's credit card numbers, and they also don't steal from your business.

They wanted $15 an hour and now they got shit. Fuck 'em and fuck the assholes who thought they could just mandate higher wages with no other options for business proprietors. Seems there are options that exist aside from employing life-long losers who can't EARN anything better than minimum wage.

They've also added self-serve checkouts, so I guess their commitment to their workers only goes so far.

Businesses are not social welfare programs. Not that I ever expect you to acknowledge this fact.

In any case people hire workers when workers are NECESSARY to operating their business. When the workers make it more cost effective to pay for a machine that can do the same job more efficiently and at less of a cost then the workers are no longer necessary.

Here's a bunch of union auto workers who can attest to this principle:

ROTFL

Those losers aren't going to work at all whether it's for me or anyone else. Not quite sure how you think there's a downside in that for me or any employer.

Well, it's good that you're not an employer if you can't figure out that a labor shortage causes wages to rise, and/or means you can't staff your business adequately.

People like andy don't get this and never will.

Business do not operate for the sole purpose of employing people.

More people unemployed =/= a labor shortage.

Read the op, and I even helpfully bolded the part that says "tight labor market." Maybe that means something different in Bartland.

But if we pass a law that says mean old business owners have to give high wages and free cookies to everyone then it HAS to happen, right?
