DrCaleb DrCaleb:
I recall that' and it was indeed effective. And satisfyingly evil. :)

I would hope that something good came of it.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
A similar thing is happening here. People are whinging about the bad lazy and violent Immigrants, despite previously being shown that immigration isn't even at record levels; that immigrants tend to be the most law abiding and tend to be from the Euro zone or Scandanavia.

And remember this, only a couple months ago?

I won't speak for Canada but in the US the difference is found when immigrants are not just prone to crime and violence (like the Irish) but are prone to ORGANIZED crime and violence (like the Italians and Muslims).

Mindless, random crime is (for better or for worse) an acceptable risk to society. Planned, organized crime/violence has a darker aspect to it.

Thus we are more disturbed by the deaths of 84 victims at the hands of a Muslim terrorist and his logistical supporters than we are by the hundreds of deaths that occur at the hands of individual and loosely organized black and Hispanic thugs on a regular basis.

Society abhors the idea of thoughtful, well-planned acts of violence thus we assign additional penalties to pre-meditated murder while an act of murder that occurs as part of a spur-of-the-moment anger is not viewed as harshly.

This part of our collective social consciousness applies to the Muslims and thus you see some people on this board who contemplate that spontaneous acts of rape carried out by Muslims are not as bad as the organized Muslim rape gangs of the UK.

The organized and planned acts tweak us in our core. And the Muslims right now seem to have that market cornered.

A century ago it was the Italians.

I think there were people sufficiently embarrassed by it, IIRC. I think too that I wasn't one. No offense to President Bush or President Obama, but things they say I don't really care about. While they one day may affect me, the POTUS isn't my head of state. So I only pay attention to them with one eye open. ;)

Like the current shenanigans. They amuse me. Sometimes they shock me. But I can't vote for them, so I have no cock in that fight. Like Michael Chertoff said in an interview yesterday on CBC (article posted on front page), if people hadn't been so concerned about the dirty tricks going on in the Bush vs Gore presidential race, someone might have picked up on what 19 people were planning for the next September. Things that make you go . . .hmmmmmmm.

I recall when we first took in all those Vietnamese Refugees, there were some gang problems too. But some gunfights and some jail sentences later, and the problem went away. Recent stats showed that the other Vietnamese not involved in the gang violence had families, and those kids generally went to post secondary and became doctors and engineers. Win <> win!

True. Some of the best people I work with are 2nd generation Vietnamese.

And it's been a good fifteen years since the last time I heard anyone say 'boo' about Vietnamese gangs around here.

Lemmy Lemmy:
Never said I had all the answers. But restricting immigration isn't it. As for lazy millennials, I'd send 'em all to the Canadian Forces for a couple of years of smartening-the-hell-up.

If you want to hire a leadhand to tell them 'now pick up the broom. now use the broom. now put the sweepings in the garbage. now empty the garbage' etc.
And turn the total assholes into dangerous assholes.
I just thank my luck stars I no longer have to hire those bozos...
