They should really take out the bullshit about unlocking cellphones and transferring songs onto MP3 players, as well as end all the taxes on recordable CD/DVDs because they're just being fucking hypocrital if they don't.

Yes. I would fully support stiff penalties for copyright infringement, but get rid of all the bullshit of giving the force of law to DRM. They should really go the other way.

Ban locking cellphones to networks. People will realize FAST that they really don't need a GPS-camera-mp3 phone when it costs them $500+ no matter what plan they get, no subsidies from the cell phone provider. They'll get a more reasonable phone with a cheaper plan.

Ban locking legally bought-and-downloaded MP3s to specific devices. It's COPY right, not ACCESS right that's the problem. If I buy a CD, I can play it in my computer, cd player, PS2, DVD player, car, laptop, whatever regardless of brand or model. MP3s should be no different. If making copies for personal use is a requirement due to the different media it's played from, so be it. If the music companies don't like it that way, they can refuse to sell their music in MP3 format, and reap the consumer backlash. It's the distribution to others who HAVEN'T bought it that's the problem. Fuck them for wanting me to buy the same thing more than once so I can play it in more than one way.

C-61 should DIAF.

My biggest fear is that they want to make this another cash grab like photo radar. Lowering the fine to $500 sounds suspicious to me.

That sounds reasonable to me.

This bill should include a "Fair Use" clause. If you buy a CD, you buy the right to personally use the data contained on that CD in any way that you see fit, short of transfering a copy of it to someone outside of your household. (ie let both your kids load a song from the CD onto their iPod.

I'm not much into downloading, but I don't plan on bringing a CD player to the gym with me. My ipod is a better solution.

While they are at it, they should also write into the law that any provider selling a digital entertainment file provides the purchaser with the rights to convert that file into a suitable format for their environment. This is only fair competition, since if I own an ipod and load up from itunes now, I will basically be locked into Ipods forever, or risk loosing every piece of music I have ever bought by switching to a Zune or other MP3 player. I would have thought after Microsofts court cases brough on by Apple in the past, they would have been MUCH faster to sue Apple and insist that Apple provide the rest of the world with the ability to use their proprietary file types, and/or the tools to convert your iTunes library back to an industry standard format.

Has the bill passed yet?

I can't find anything that states it passed a vote before the summer break.
