They project Cmbt Engineer NCM will be full most of the next fiscal, sorry man. You could still get in but you will probably have a long wait on your hands. They might have spots for officer though.

Thought I would weigh in as I am posted to a recruiter billet.

Since the Afghan mission has started there has been a lot of focus on the army. I have seen guys walk in and demand a combat arms trade, even though they had many more options available to them.

My actual trade is Marine Engineer, depending on the route you take it can take up to 8 years to become technician (QL5) qualified, and the QL5 course is just shy of 2 years long. A lot of the Air Force and Navy technical trades are very long on training and the work is not very glamourous (they would rather give the commendations to the button pushers, but I swear I am not bitter).

Recruiting involves a lot of factors, and finding the right person for the job is hard because the person has to be interested and qualify. The CF is the only employer in the country where we would willingly take over-qualified people and gladly down grade them in comparison to their capabilities and it isnt even an issue about money, mostly just plugging holes.

Also, as a side note you need more education to become a cook than a marine engineer.

Depending on the training cycle at the school you could get in but it is more dependent on being in the right place at the right time. For example we would not let you in now if the basic trades course isnt scheduled to run for 18 months. If that is what you want visit your local recruiter often, you may just get lucky.

They should be careful about what former colonies they take recruits from.

Well, those from the 'less than jolly' countries 'aint applying.

The Fijian's have done a great job and there has always been a big South African minority in the Brit Mil.

I guess they can't accept someone and (trying to find the correct terms) train them as both an infantry man and another trade like taking a double major at university.

many of the electronics techs spend their time as ground crew when the electronics is not keeping them busy.
