Lmfao, Oh Arizona... No one likes you anyway.. :D

It may seem archaic, anachronistic, racist and totalitarian but the people of Arizona seem to like it that way and since they keep voting in people with these views, who are we to judge?

Makes perfect sense to me. If Arizona wishes to have their students taught by teachers that have accurate English skills then by all means they should pass that law. I had a Chinese calculus teacher in college who couldn't speak English if his life depended on it. One day I just got up and walked out and never came back to that class. Was a waste of my time. The guy knew math but wasn't able to teach math.

Despite the somewhat inflamatory title of the article, the decision to pursue Fluent English speakers for English classes doesn't seem at all controversial. The more the other side freaks out about nonissues, the less credible their case seems. It will really do a disservice to those who want to pursue some path to citizenship once the borders are secured.

Arizona just seems to want to grab headlines this month.. sorta like a lightening rod.

However, I will give the state kudos on the vote they took to raise taxes 1% to pay for schools, roads etc..

Don't think that would happen in to many places...

As an Anglophile American I agree English should be THE official Language
of the United States. The influx of Spanish types flooding into the States
seems to be a bit much that they are preferable to the Muzzie that are
spewing onto our shores.

I'm curious if this applies to some hill billy out of West Virginia with an accent so thick you could build a deck on it and call it a patio?

As far as I am concerned, yes.

$1:
Teachers who are not fluent in English, who make grammatical errors while speaking or who have heavy accents will be temporarily reassigned.

This is a problem for some people? Think about it: HOW THE HELL CAN SOMEONE TEACH ENGLISH IF THEY CAN'T ARTICULATE IT PROPERLY THEMSELVES?!?!

It's not rocket science people.

Yes, the same would reply. I would hope that somebody before hand would have sent
him to speech class to cut down his accent. There is the Hill Bill Accent, the
Cajun Accent and the Jive accent that can get to be very hard understand.

I did have a lab assistant for a Physics class that had a heavy accent. At times
we student had to compare notes to attempt to figure out what she had said.

How can they get away with stuff like this?!

If you read the article you'll see that nine school districts have been cited and fined for non-compliance with the Federal law that requires this. The state has been compelled to enforce the provisions of the Federal law is all.

To put it in perspective, do you think Quebec should tolerate French teachers who speak in heavy accents and who barely speak French themselves? Of course not. Likewise, if someone is going to teach English they should be proficient in the language.

This is why Ebonics(Pidgin) died in inner city schools. Thankfully, educated and influential blacks, who spoke standard English said, "I don't think so!"

Exactly. As one black parent in Oakland, California said (paraphrased),

"I'm trying to teach my kids to be doctors and lawyers and they (the public schools) want to teach them to be janitors and car washers."

'Ebonics' was the racism of liberal white people writ large.
