My personal biggest regret is not getting a job when I turned 14.

And your 22 year old child there doesn't sound like he has had any previous work experience.

He just needs to be weened of the idea that you'll walk him through every step of his daily tasks like his mom would.

But it's annoying because he's 22 and frankly he should have been weened like that a decade ago.

I was lucky, I had my first "real" job when I was 13. I worked for Canox and worked every weekend when they were closed so I could repaint the gas cylinders. On days or weeks that I had school off, I worked in the office section. Got to work with some really ancient equipment by today's standards like a punch card computer and a teletype machine.

Work for your immigrant uncle in construction. It only takes a couple days of 'you dumb cute', 'lazy fuck', 'pussy' and dodging kicks to the ass for you to know on your next job you have the 2x4 there waiting before the boss needs it.
Did another job with a 24 & a 27 yr old the other day on a mountaintop. After the 4th time, I informed them they didn't have to run up and down the 1/4 mile of rock for tools if they brought the whole fucking toolbelt. This was a couple hours AFTER I pointed out they'd hiked up to the tower site and left their climbing belts in the truck.
Yeah the younger one doesn't have work experience. Actually thought his 3 hour work day included an hour or so to go out for lunch. Had his Mommy co-sign for a bank account and after a month the two of them couldn't get it set up for EFTs.
Like I've mentioned before these are training jobs and these ARE the best candidates from the selection I got. I've actually had three applicants who thought that I had to fill out the application, one who got angry when he dropped a blank one off as I wasn't there, came back three times when I wasn't there and finally caught me only to find I hadn't done it!

I trained a pair of high school girls for their first job.

I also trained a 20 year old guy who'd never held a job.

The pair of girls did great. The guy didn't.

But then I also think he was getting an incorrect amount of Ritalin.

herbie herbie:
And I love it when they tell me "Windoze says" 255.255.255.192 is not a valid netmask...

I gave up trying to teach subnetting, out of 50 students I only had a couple who understood. One guy said "who cares" I'll just wait for IPv6.

Is that why modern programmers can't do RAM allocation properly? People got tired trying to teach it?

You know when it gets to me? When the tech for a large business who get $75K a year, 7 weeks holiday, medical and 100% dental calls
"This Internet connection you sold is is fucking up AGAIN! Host not found! I've had enough of this BULLSHIT! I can't even ping the gateway!"
What IP are you pinging?
"The GATEWAY stupid! 192.168.0.1"
But I'm used to it. 15 years of dial up customers insisting the servers must be down because Windows says there's No Dialtone.

We's got oodles of ram, who needs allocation.

They should be given a course in machine code with only 64K to play with, less the ram allocated to the OS, device drivers, etc.

You have to shake your head at Canada's education system. My son and his class were doing things in Grade 6 math, here in Taiwan(I guess it should also be pointed out that everything is memorization, with no synthesis here), that they only started to touch on in Grade 8 back in Canada. He's also pissed because he didn't make the honour list this past year, because he hated sewing in their PA(home ec) class. He scored in the mid 90s in all of his other subjects. He made the point that he was in school to learn important things, so he wouldn't have to depend on knowing how to operate a sewing machine.

I think that the first "programming" language they should teach is Assembler.
If the students can get through that, then they're ready to be programmers. :D

I had a tech support guy from my IP told me that the reason I couldn't access the Internet with any of my programs, like MSN messenger or bittorent or Opera or Internet explorer or the MMO attachments EVEmon and EVE-Meep was because both my browsers had been corrupted.

I am deeply embarrassed to say that I took the advice of that young technician and had just finished uninstalling Opera before I reset my Modem.

I find it always funny, that when I don't have internet access, they always tell me to reset my modem. Like I don't do that BEFORE I call them??
