Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Weaponry can be stolen. Weaponry can be illegally traded. They can cause massive devastation to any part of Canada's society on any giving day.
Yes a gun may be stolen but the chances are very small, particularly if one takes proper precautions. Guns are required by law to be stored in such a manner that one can not easily break into and gain access to the weapon. Which seems perfectly reasonable to me. And if guns are stolen so what? Most guns used in crime are illegally smuggled in from the states. Even if you managed to prevent all guns from ever being stolen the market would merely respond by smuggling more guns in. Even Britain can't stop illegal guns from getting in and its an island.
All making guns illegal will do is prevent law abiding citizens from owning guns while doing nothing to stop criminals from owning guns.

Guns are not a part of Canadian culture today (In before history lesson about some gun owners in the 1600's).
Your average hunter or rural Albertan farmer would beg to differ.

People do not feel safe when guns are presented in society. Socially disruptive, the attempts to call guns 'safe' are like promoting cigarettes 'light in tar'.
People not feeling safe around guns points more to lack of knowledge and media scare mongering than an informed position. Guns are safe, shooting sports have one of the lowest injury rates of any sport. Properly handled guns are extremely safe. Its misuse of guns that are the problem

Other unnecessary things aren't made for the purpose of killing and slaughtering the innocent and guilty. These other useless things serve a purpose of their own, just as everything does.
The purpose of an MP3 Player is to play music.
The purpose of a suitcase is to carry your shit.
The purpose of a credit card is to get screwed.
The purpose of a phone is to talk mindlessly.
The purpose of a gun is to kill.
I've never understood this fixation something purpose. It doesn't matter what something's purpose is it matters what it is used for. I don't care that a lead pipe is meant to transport water, what I do care about is when someone is beating me over the head with one. The purpose of a gun is not to kill it is to propel a projectile, its what people do with that projectile that counts.
A baseball bat is nothing more than a club, rockets that are used to launch telecommunication satellites were once ICBMs, a sword is nothing more than a really long knife and many hunting rifles used to be military rifles.

The thing is, people are going to use tools for the purpose they were created. A small fraction will use products in actions not designed for their purpose. And sure, maybe some redneck likes to tare up targets with an automatic gun. Good for him. I like to masturbate in public. Not gunna happen.
The thing is that all the items I listed in my previous post could be misused just as guns could be. There are about 7 million registered guns in Canada, actual number of guns is probably closer than 10 million. There are about 9000 gun crimes per year. If no gun is used for more than one crime that is 0.09% of all guns are used for crime and most of those guns are illegal from the states.
Its the misuse that we both have problems. Instead of spending time and resources on law abiding gun owners focus the efforts on stopping cross border gun smuggling and policing the streets better.

So, why smack a person upside the head with a DVD player when you can kill him and his entire family with one clip? It's like an incentive, the ease a gun has. The power it has to murder and harm anyone around you.
A knife can be just as deadly as a gun and even has some advantages over guns. Do you fell the urge to kill or commit crimes when you are in your kitchen? If you answer no that means you are a moral and responsible person who isn't going to commit a crime just because a weapon is around. It is ridiculous to think that the mere presence of an inanimate object is going to make one more likely to commit murder.
Besides do you seriously think that if someone is dead set on murdering someone that a lack of a gun will stop him? Remove guns and people will use knives, remove knives and thugs will start using baseball bats, get rid of baseball bats and its lead pipes, no more lead pipes will just mean 2x4s will be used, etc. Even if you remove everything that could potentially be a weapon people will just use their fists. The simple fact is as long as someone wants someone else dead they will find a way. The deciding factor in whether or not some is going to try and kill someone else is their character not whether or not they have a gun.

Having an automatic gun is a complete threat to society around you.
No criminals having an automatic gun is a threat to society, the recreational shooter who only uses his gun on the range and keeps it locked in a gun safe the rest of the time is no threat to anyone.
