Wanker is one of the best words ever! Mildly lewd, but still acceptable in conversation. Not quite as strong as some saltier epithets, but more original than "dumbass." The closest I can think is the Yiddish "putz"--another underused beauty!

Nobody in Canada (at least where I'm from) uses the term "wanker" and would most probably be thought a queer for saying it. It amuses me when people use British lexicon to make themselves...articulate. In any case, "wanking around" is most likely attributed to "dicking around" which means wasting time, not being productive, jerking around, pointless..
