Nice, he sold out his band for a 30 pieces of silver. I wonder when he's moving to Montreal and running for Mayor. But, this new info begs the question. Did they band even know why their land claim suddenly disappeared. :P

My guess is that if more provinces do what BC did we'll start to see a pattern of nepotism and corruption in the ranks of Native Leadership that even we sceptics didn't think possible.

I'm still at a loss as to why your Parliament won't pass legislation that will permanently settle all future land claims.

Because screaming "racism" is too valuable a cash crop for those on the Canadian left that make too much money and gain too many political brownie points from resorting to such accusations all the time? :?

Becasue the treaties have to be negotiated with the First Nations. There's over 200 in BC alone (although we do have, by far, the most). The land claims overlap, and the process is intensely complex and litigious. The lawyers are making a killing. Some of the bands have an interest in settling, but many others do not. Even after they are signed there are still residual obligations on the Crown, so it's not like the problem goes away.

The path of least resistance for government is the status quo.

Jesus fuck, what's wrong with you. I'm no defender of the natives, but that's how negotiations work - the govt gives the band cash and the band surrenders claims to land.

$1:
Last week, reacting against calls that he should resign, Mr. Giesbrecht released a statement saying that he retains full support of 53 of 57 voting Kwikwetlem members — and launched a YouTube channel filled with video testimonials from supporters.

“He has basically taken our First Nation from nothing to everything we have today,” said Mr. Giesbrecht’s brother, Randy.

Since Mr. Giesbrecht’s income became public, even dissident members have acknowledged that the past few years have seen major economic and social gains, including the construction of a new on-reserve housing complex.

So he didn't get his money from federal handouts, but essentially from selling claim to 236 hectares of land to the province. If his fellow band members don't like it, they can do something about it. It's not really any of our business.

If it turned out he refused to settle the claim you'd be winging about how the band was offered good money and turned it down.

The fun part comes when the band decides that because they're Natives the sale doesn't apply to them and they don't have to abide by a legal bill of sale. But they won't have to give the money back either of course, also because they're Natives. Special people = special rights.

Native groups can block any city road or highway anytime they like without facing legal consequences.

Yup, a big ship side grey one. and to be honest I didn't notice that stuff it all that much when I was in the middle of the Pacific because the only news we got came over a teletype and most of that turned out illegible.

Freakin Radiomen. Should never have allowed them to "Muster for Grog" before operating their equipment.
