Thanks for posting this. More people need to know that it's completely inappropriate to desecrate the poppy with, Canada pins and other such tripe just to hold it in place.

If a person's concerned about losing their poppy all they have to do is pull the pin back, place it in place and then push the pin in so it passes through the left side of the poppy. This will hold the poppy in place without desecrating it.

But, here's a well written dit about the White Poppy that always seems to surface at this time of year.

I read this article yesterday and it is good to remind people about what is appropriate. I have often seen people use other types of lapel pins to center their poppies with.

I have lost a few over the years but fortunately getting another one is not difficult. More often, I end up with multiple ones as I'll leave one on a jacket or sweater then wear another jacket and forget to transfer it so I'll end up obtaining another one while I'm out.

Housewife's suggestion in the random thread is to bend the pin to prevent it from slipping. A good idea that I don't think equates to desecrating it.

In some ways yes. Think of it like this. If you were to walk downtown in a uniform that was a bag of crap, unkempt, unclean, incorrect badges and medals and told people you were doing it to show respect to the military how do you think some people would react?

But hey, do whatever you want because by fucking up the poppy you're actually altering a trademarked item and could be liable to any legal consequences if someone got real snotty.

I hope not my Sargent told me to bend the tip of the pin to keep it in place. I was forever losing mine. Of course then you end up with one in every jacket and coat your wearing during the first part of November but it’s a good cause so not a problem. Well unless you end up speaking with a 96 year old vet wearing metals, his wedge cap and commemorative pins. Then it’s expensive but only happens once a year and you learn some interesting things when you take the time.


When we first moved down here I was horrified at the number of people wearing theirs wrong or after the 11th.

I still wear mine with a flag pin, and I've seen lots of veterans who do it too. I don't see the big deal. The point is remembrance, not adherence to a set of rules.

Frankly, if the Legion wants us not to 'desecrate' it as they say, they should offer an option with a clasp like the flag pin I could buy for five bucks (or whatever) - like they do for the politicians who get a black centre pin to hold it on.

Toronto is a really BIG city. Perhaps where Cherry visited no one was wearing a poppy, but that is untrue for the whole city. I live here and i wear one, as does my husband and
my friends at work and many other people that I don't know at the grocery store... the library... the restaurant and and and

I wear a red poppy and I am proud to wear it.
