I think it's an excellent bargaining tactic. In that David Orchard essay I put in the NAFTA thread, he cited the US cutting us off in trade, in the hopes they could annex us after losing to us in war.
Same goes here, Trump tried to pressure us into a very one way deal. Now we don't have to depend so much on that deal, we have options both east and west for our products.
South isn't as important as it once was. So, they can compromise on the intentional poison pills, or take their ball and go home.
