If this were any other industry involved I'd tell them to go F-off. But unfortunatly the job losses will be catastrophic for everyone everywhere in North America so something has to be done.

I'd start though with telling all the union guys that all the existing contracts are now null and void and that all pension benefits are now cut by 50%. Tough titty, but everyone involved will have to bite the bullet this time around.

Agreed. I'm all for unions, but the auto workers' unions here and south of the border have priced themselves out of the market.

So didn't these auto companies get a bailout in the start of the 80's for pretty much the same reasons? They had there chance to fix the way they do business in North America, instead they used the money to setup new factories overseas in China to make the cars that the market actualy demands, meanwhile using there bailout money to slowly layoff NA workers.

Of course not, because if we did, they'd call it unfair trade and we'd get fined again.

I think if there's a bailout again, the government(s) should get a chunk of the auto makers stock. Maybe then they'll listen to people when they are told to stop making huge, expensive gas guzzlers.

But how useful will the bailout be? Sure, GM will survive the year without filling for Chapter 11 or Chapter 7 bankruptcy, but the structural problems are still there.

The big three are still making cars and trucks that aren't competitive with Asian made cars and until that changes, the bailout will be a finger in the dyke and nothing more.
