Brilliant. Because 1 moron parent complained (and you'll notice his/her reasoning is suspiciously absent)? Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

The Chysallids got banned at my highschool because some bible-thumping parent had a 6-toed kid that she didn't want reading about mutants.

$1:
Published in 1960, the book by Harper Lee is considered a classic of American literature. It chronicles a southern lawyer's struggle against racial injustice in a fictional Alabama town.

"It was around language and the use of the 'N' word in certain contexts with her child," he said. "The principal elected to select an alternative text for the fall."

Give me a break. This is PC gone retarded.
I'm sure that grade 10 kids have heard the "N-word" by then.

I think that's somewhat justifiable. Somewhat. It's still PC, no doubt, but I think it has to do with her six toed kid, over the fact she believes in God.

Have you read the book? Her motives were religious. It backfired anyway. As soon as it got banned, every grade 10 kid went out and read it on their own.

Yeah I read the book, I didn't like it much, but yes, I read it.

Crysallids is one of the most incredible books I have ever read...I loved that book and I actually stole it from my school and still have it.

Whats next on the banning list...1984, Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, War and Peace?....Its literature and brilliant works as well.

It was a pretty good book. It's a good book for grade 10s because it symbolizes a lot of teen issues, like prejudice and clique. I liked it. That was 25 years ago, though. I couldn't say whether I'd enjoy it now.

I think it's because the threat of nuclear was is over. Another I truly hated was "Catcher in the Rye". I don't think I'll ever figure that book out.

Next is See Spot Run for objectifying animals.
Whomever complained about this book is a mental midget (and probably had to read it in school as well). It's a great story that can and will open classroom discussion about racism and it's underlying issues, the "N-" word was used in context in the story as it was at the time, people think that by blocking stories they can erase rasism and ignore the past, it's purely stupid and I'm willing to bet that the person complaining isn't even black.

Good point, but, this isn't a case of just one idiot parent. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most banned books in N. America along with Huckberry Finn.

.. except this is all the fault of just one idiot parent.

$1:
Campbell said the parent, who has a child starting the course this fall, objected to language used in the book.

If either 1984 or Animal Farm are banned from schools a rebellion is well overdue.

The problem is the simple parent has employed simple logic. Sanitizing the world for her child won't make the kid any better in the long run; not if he/she is sheltered from every contentious idea that may confront them. There were/are racist people in the world, but the book holds Atticus Finch up as a concientious man well ahead of his time, a hero and a symbol. Kids should be exposed to the intolerance and a hell of a model of how to deal with it.

Boo Radley eventually kicks the hell out of the racist anyway. (SPOILER ALERT!)
