Lawsuit aims to compel Ethiopia to release Canadian

Let me get this straight, the guy is a convicted terrorist. Now his cousin wants Canada to cut off aid to MILLIONS of staving people so that a terrorist can go free?

We have enough trash in this country we do not need to bring more in.

The problem is not in Canada, it's in Ethiopia. If he wants to do something constructive he should go over there and try to get him released. In the very unlikely event his suit succeeds (about two years from now) there is no guarantee at all that Ethiopia would release him.

Again, I have to say.. China convicted the Dalai Lama of terrorism. South Africa convicted Nelson Mandela of terrorism. Ethiopa convicted this man of terrorism.

What did he do? Nobody knows anything.

Don't condemn someone because a third world country says he's a terrorist.

I think you could amend that to "Don't condemn someone because a country says he's a terrorist". Happens in Europe and North America as well.

Then once you have the rather nice blue passport, you can go back to where you came from, do all kindsa stuff and when you get locked up back in your place of birth for breaking the laws you were well aware of ('cos you were born there), you can demand that Canada helps you.

Last time I looked the courts cannot interfere in government policy, therefore the courts cannot order the government to amend, halt, increase or decrease financial aid to another country as this would be the courts attempting to set government policy. Therefore the suit should be immediately thrown out as the court has no jurisdiction.

He's a plastic Canadian that was born somewhere else, got his citizenship through our ridiculously easy system that asks for zero commitment to Canada, then left and went back to his country of birth, got arrested and screams for Canada to help him.

I think I know a little bit more about the immigration system than you do, but you may know more about baseball hats than me.

Regardless of how the system allowed him to become a citizen, how do you propose we deal with the current Canadian citizens? You feel that basically any Canadian who leaves our soil is on his own? Or somehow we'll pick and choose which ones to help?

No, I think we need to tighten up the requirements for citizenship.

The current requirements are way too low. We need to encourage loyalty and citizenship by extending the residency period and making the citizenship test an actual test that people need to study for, instead of the joke tick test we have now.

The plastic Canadians that already have a nice blue passport, well it's too late for us to do something about them.

Too late? If we were to tighten up the requirements in 2010, are you saying that only people who became a citizen after 2010 are eligible to have the government seek clemency for them?
