I guess Obama used memo's because he knew his desire to legalize pot would never have passed muster in the House. So he decided to circumvent the legal system.
Given we're about to legalize the stuff I just won how much this is going to effect our relationship with our largest trading partner?
In the short run we proceed with our own legalization policies. We do NOT sell out our own sovereign right to govern ourselves in order to placate a pack of hysterical social conservative scolds in the United States, not even if they've managed to get the levers of power in their ridiculous hands.
Ten thousand Americans die per year from fentanyl overdoses. Thirty thousand die from firearms. Yet we're going to alter our policies to make happy some American evangelical shitheads who've been throwing a fifty-year long tantrum over cannabis? Yeah, fuck all of them. The world is going to become more and more post-American as the suicidal decisions of the American electorate causes more and more damage to their society. Canada, and all of the other Western nations, needs to move away from them and to govern our own country and live our own lives free of American foolishness.

And as you put it, we may not sell our sovereign right to govern ourselves but, before we get all uppity and moral about it, remember we're breaking a UN treaty in order to legalize marijuana which, like it or not will give even more ammunition for the Administration down south to use against us in order to gain an advantage when making trade and other deals.
I imagine that when our legalization goes into effect alot of people can expect the same types of restrictions penalties and turnbacks on the US side of the border that we currently impose on Americans trying to carry guns into our country.
So, like I said, it'll be interesting to see just how this plays out given, we have the largest undefended border in the world and we're just about to piss off our largest trading partner. My guess is that it won't turn out as well as some people in Ottawa think it will and getting indigenous and LGBT rights written into any trade deals will be the least of this Gov'ts problems when dealing with the Americans.
It is really hard to grasp that an organization like that has a better scientific outlook than the Attorney General of the United States.
States rights don't matter when it comes to a largely harmless drug that has significant tax benefits for the state?
I wonder where all the "states should govern their own" republicans are.

Republicans dont really believe in anything anymore. When its convenient for them to shriek states rights thats what they di. When its convenient for them to shriek Federal authority then thats what they do. They really have very few values left, they say whatever they think will help expand the power of their cult.
This Republican civil war thats going on right now is rift between the last few values-based Republicans and the nihilistic Trumpers who believe in nothing except their absolute hatred of everyone who isnt them.
Don't you people know "they" are adding carfentanyl into the marijuana to get people addicted faster these days?
And thousands are dying of overdoses injecting it?
Think of the children!
And all those stockholders of private prisons that will end up homeless....
I wonder where all the "states should govern their own" republicans are.

If they don't like the Federal Gov't butting into what they consider their affairs maybe they should just secede?
I was only half sarcastic - one of the reasons given for the reversal was to "protect the children"... read that they'll go all J Edgar on any state setting the age to 18 or 19.

Tell that to republicans, they're the ones who bitch about state rights.

We've pissed them off before. Anyways maybe if you go down there and bury your nose deep eneough in Trump's asshole, all will be forgiven.
While I disagree with this decision by the A.G. I think that it will amount to nothing. Cenk makes some good points in the video. The fact of the matter is that once government gets used to the taste of new revenue streams from new taxes, they NEVER give them up. NEVER!!! The states that legalized weed for recreational use are cleaning up. They could not care less what the feds think. They are not about to give up those tax dollars just because some pinhead in D.C. has a problem with weed. What are the feds going to do? Raid some dispensaries? The industry will start their own insurance program to assist anyone that gets raided. The feds may confiscate some plants, good luck getting a conviction. The people on the jury are locals. They support legalization. Just look at the Bundy's. The feds tried to play the tough guy and steal the herd from some old rancher in Nevada. The old rancher was seen as a hero by the locals. A bunch of locals got on the horn and pretty soon an armed posse was getting the old man's cattle back for him. The feds had to tuck their tail and run. Pretty pathetic showing from the feds. The old rancher got careless and left the safety of southern Nevada. The feds snatched him up. Problem for the feds is the trial is set in southern Nevada where the locals will never convict. The trial just ended in a mistrial, making the feds look even more pathetic and impotent. The rancher does not even have the state government on his side, and the feds cannot get a conviction. The weed industry DOES have the support of the state government. The feds have ZERO chance of stopping the weed industry now. The feds should stop embarrassing themselves, and wasting their time (and OUR money). One in six Americans now have access to legal weed. We are not going back.

And if you took your head out of your's you'd see that there's more to diplomacy than going into "trade" negotiations from a position of weakness and then demanding that your opponent bow to your white liberal guilt.
But, please allow me to complement you on your schoolyard insult. I haven't felt that abused since andyt left.
