Alot of these kids get out in the world and discover that they aren't the be all end all and just can't handle that fact or the pressure of having to perform against other kids and then discovering not everyone is a winner.
We as a society have done these kids a great disservice by sheltering them from the harsh realities of life and unfortunately for us it's going to take a couple of generations to breed out the PC insanity that's turned these kids into non hackers with emotional problems.
So this is what comes of the virtue-signalling Marxist mentality rampant in our universities.
How old were you when you started watching the boob tube?
So this is what comes of the virtue-signalling Marxist mentality rampant in our universities.
No, this is what comes from the assumption that bodies of supposedly free thought must move lock step into the intolerant and narrow vision that people outside universities decide they must adhere to.
In other words, the people who think they are virtue signalling dens of Marxist thought.

'Supposedly free thought'. You got that much right. The idea that our universities today support free though is absolutely ludicrous when a small minority of intellectually challenged students are allowed to block anyone they think might hurt their feelings by telling the truth of a situation. I am so glad that I attended at time when free speech was championed and all opinions welcomed, discussed and debated openly.

I have a cousin with 2 kids in University.
They still are places of free thought and open expression, despite your assertion they are not.

No matter how much I wish to say this is true. It's not that way at every University. There is a serious liberal slant and has been for decades. We have videos of students baring speakers invited to campus because they don't agree with them. They claim the person is anti-(whatever), hate speech, a Nazi or all those and more at the same time.
Not every campus is like that but it is slowly spreading. If it is not halted they campus with open discussion and free speech will be in the minority.

I never experienced a place I wasn't able to express my opinions.

Not every campus is like that, true. But the rest of your statement assumes University students are not rational beings capable of self realization, and also capable of seeing the same aspects of society we see.
They do.
And they are perfectly able to make their own decisions the same as we do in the protection of their own free thought and speech.
Also, nosy busy bodies from outside universities have been trying to force their will on those universities since Roman times, I'll bet.
But none of this has anything to do with the increasing suicide rates those institutions face.

Ancient Greece: Socrates forced to drink Hemlock do is "radical" teachings.

agreed, sorry for diverting a serious topic.
I wish we had a better understanding of what is going on in their heads PRIOR to suicide. Not all of them are bat shit crazy. I suspect it is a lack of coping skills in some cases. They haven't faced harsh reality of life. (every one gets a participation trophy) Then in collage there is extreme pressure to get those grades at the U. you or your family are paying out the nose for. You are on your own for really the first time in your life. Mom and dad are not there to make you get out of bed, fix you dinner, pick you up when you can't find your friends you are with. Truthfully collage is not for everyone but society tells you that you must have a degree to be a success. All these pressures and more have to be contributing to a lot of collage suicides.

I suspect it's some or all of those.

Then, why are these kids flocking to Universities like moths to a flame?
I find it odd that no one at these universities is addressing the elephant in the room which is the myth that everyone should get a university education, and that everyone who goes to university will get their dream job that pays a million more than a high school grad over their working lifetime.
Sadly, all those University recruiting campaigns are doing is perpetuating the misery of financial bondage and mental anguish that alot of these kids are being put into. It's time for someone to step in and turn the universities back into institutions of nothing but education rather than money making entities who'll accept pretty much anyone so long as they can pay or borrow the money.
