EU proposes crackdown on Canadian seal products

In a move that could represent a crippling blow to Canada's commercial seal hunt, the European Union has proposed banning all products from seals that have been killed inhumanely -- according to its own definition.

Thank god, about time. Everybody should just ban the product, and hopefully lead our government into banning the hunt of seals. Infact we should just get the government to do that right now. The Seal industry is a joke, nothing but a bloody slaughter and torture.

First kill. The family will have mitts and other fur to stay warm with now.

    Seals aren't endangered, sharks are.

If every ocean resource was as well managed as the Canadian seal hunt, we likely wouldn't have any endangered species. Yet while sharks and tuna are on the brink, eco nuts keep attacking the seal hunt. It's as bad as Harpers vendetta against western farmers.

The EU is the joke, not the seal hunt.
A hopeless blend of archaic bureaucracy, insane
immigration policies, and runaway social engineering..
their major Continental players have already ensured
the future bankruptcy of their own state insurance programs.
Their demographics and spinelessness suggest they will
just be a huge Caliphate some day.
They'd be better trying to manage their own affairs
and both traditional, and new, internicene conflicts,
rather than interfering in our business.

The EU's got it right. If you want to stop the hunt stop buying the damned fur and nobody will hunt seals. If you keep buying them then STFU.

Where I worked the seals were harvested mostly for the fur as goosedown and faux fur dont cut the cold.Unlike the commercial hunt the Innuit did it to survive and every bit was used, nothing was wasted.

Some of the fur is put through the govt. broker because thats the only way you can sell furs in Canada now. Then it's distributed amongst the former Hudson bay stores which is now called the northern store.
It took me a bit to figure out how racoon furs were for sale in Nunavut in a place where there is no racoons. But thats how the few hunters make their living, wolf, seal and polar bear fur has to go through the govt. and has a stamp on each hide.

I can allmost guarantee anyone getting off a plane in Rankin inlet in November to june will be shelling out a few bucks for fur mitts and eyeing up the sealskin parka's worn by the locals.

The fur hat and kamiks usually are bought the second day.
I traded smokes for my sealskin mitts. Their rough cut and not made for looks, just warmth and have beaver and wolverine fur for trim. The beaver go's inside the cuff to keep out water and the wolverine rim's the outside of the cuff to keep out the wind.

I forget how many packs of smokes I traded for these but I would have paid $300.00

IF the EU is so concerned about animal cruelty why don't they try the same policies with China? China has a much worse record then Canada...

Chinese TV has even been known to air TV shows based upon throwing two wild animals into a cage so they will fight (like a grizzly and a lion) and air it prime time... Just search youtube if you don't believe me...
