OTTAWA - Ottawa's tumbling fiscal fortunes and the possibility of budget cuts could not have happened at a worse time for the battle-worn Canadian military, which is still waiting on replacements for its tired and aged planes, ships and vehicles.

Well, under the circumstances, if the feds are going to run a deficit this is the first place to start cutting.

You gotta do what you gotta do. I just wish my Congress would actually try to balance the budget for once.

The military cannot afford any cuts. They needed new ships, planes, etc. in the 90's.

Any cuts could collapse the entire organization.

Not much of a surprise given the projects Harper has already cancelled or delayed. I guess we're looking at yet another decade of darkness...

Yea, that GST cut was a great idea.

the military is already underfunded. How the hell is this the first place to start cutting? it's a shame this country has become so neglectful to what should be the most important department. The very department that is the reason we have the deomcratic process we have today. There have got to be plenty of other less important places to find money.

I can tell you that as soon as the military budget gets cut, the numbers of personnel is going to decrease to a critical level. No one is going to want to serve a country that doesn't give a shit about them.

Maybe they should do what tehs chools do and have a bake sale.

Seriously, that GST was a bad idea, but hindsight is 20/20 and I sure appreciated it. Fact is we can't cut defence spending when we are in a war. I don't think Canadians will stand for ti if they sense it increases risks to our soldiers.

I say we take the equalization payment we were going to give to Quebec and give it to DoD instead.

But remember Robair, that is money. So what if the government goes into deficit and devalues the very worth of your currency because they can't make ends meet? You have a little extra cash right now.

It should be the first place to cut precisely because it isn't the most important department (the damn thing could easily be renamed the Department of Fighting Other Countries' Wars).

Personally, I'd slash from the army budget to save the Air Force and Navy.

Wow, you'd even have a military?

Actually, I'd like a bolstered Navy and Air Force, yes.

I'm just not sure what use the army is.

I'm sure with more schooling you'll figure it out.
