Much of the western world just honoured the millions of soldiers fallen in two world wars. But we also need to look beyond post-war myths and understand the tragic political mistakes that sent these soldiers to die in wars that might have been avoided. Comments

How does this seem like a good idea? Basically this person is saying that we should have let one of the most evil regimes in history expand to murder millions of innicent people, just because it doesn't directly affect us. And hopefully take out the Soviets for us in the process.
Did they really think that Germany would have left France alone? France was an inevitable target becuase of 1918. And Britain would not have been able to stand by at that point.
"
Had Germany and its allies not been defeated, had a Carthaginian peace not been imposed upon them at Versailles and Trianon, there might never have been a Hitler, Communist Russia"
Huh? Where's the cause and effect, Eric? In fact, Communist Russia was indeed helped along by the Great War - and other factors - but how does Germany's clear hegemonic goals avoid war? How does Versailles affect Communist Russia? In fact, Versailles - and its drafters - was contentious to even its contemporaries as varying degrees of "punishment" were sought with many attendees advocating fair treatment of
Germany. History, unlike Eric's analysis, isn't that simple.
Hindsight is OUR luxury and it's too bad cranks like Margolis and Buchanan can't grasp that rather rudimentary concept
Margolis is another one. I saw him go on about how there was an accidental nato missile lauching in Norway that almost cause nuclear armigedon. What I don't understand is why he's consider an authority by many people.
continuing on, the British made an even more fatal mistake by letting
the colonies go, leading to the eventual birth of Pat Buchanan.
no way Hitler would have invaded the USSR without securing the West first.
including France.
Barbarossa had to wait an extra 6 weeks in 1941, to get the Balkans
under control first, including the oil fields that would fuel the invasion.
Its a nice idea to have let the Germans unfettered onto the Soviets,
many more dead Reds, but just not practical.
It's not that far removed from saying England should have stayed out of the First World War as was done by Niall Ferguson.
The First World War never should have happened and everyone should have stayed out of it. But there were too many countries obligated by too many complicated and overlapping treaties. Britain had no choice just like so many others.
