Canada's new fisheries minister says she supports the commercial sealing industry and doesn't expect any major changes for next year's commercial hunt, despite a European Union proposal that threatens to ban seal products as early as 2009

I hope they do ban it, this seal hunt is a embarassment to our country. With all those videos of baby seals being clubbed and blood everywhere. Even I, as a deeply patriotic Canadian felt ashamed at that momment. Can't imagine what the rest of the world thinks.

Though as the economy as it is, I would bet money that those greedy nose snobs won't do anything about it.

And what do you propose those people who partake in it replace that income with? Any suggestions would be useful instead of just sitting their protesting something with no solutions offered.

Most people who oppose the hunt do so because it sounds nice and makes them feel good about themselves. Not because it passes any test of logic.

Yea, greedy snobs trying to buy groceries and heat their homes.

Hey Bacardi, fuck you. The only injustice here is the organizations using the hunt to make money off the backs of sealers. The seal population has doubled what, five times or something since the hunt started? If every ocean resource was managed as well as the seal hunt we wouldn't have any species out there in danger of extinction, and instead of holding it up as an example of how to manage natrual resources, wingnuts like yourself are out there year after year attacking sealers.

It is illegal to kill whitecoat seals and has been for years. AND although clubbing is still done guns are being use more and more, which is even more cruel imho....not everybody is a marksman.

 Now now, he does good work with regards to whaling, shark conservation etc. It's just awefully hypocritical of him to turn around and exploit sealers for funding seing as how he was calling out other organizations for doing the same not too long ago. :x

Before you post your objections it might help if you brought yourself up to date on the current regulations concerning the hunt!

Whitecoats are newborn harp seals. Most Canadians can recall pictures of whitecoated seal pups being clubbed. The images were so inflammatory that Canada banned all hunting of whitecoats and bluebacks (in fact hooded seals) in 1987.

You'd never know that from some of the anti-sealing groups that still prominently display pictures of whitecoats on their websites and in fundraising materials. One site even features a downloadable video of people hugging whitecoats. The reality is that whitecoats can't be hunted anymore.

Which "greedy nose snobs" are you refering to? Have you ever been to a place that requires the seal hunt to survive?
