BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union gave notice Thursday it is keen to have a share of the much sought after oil, gas, mineral and fish resources in the Arctic region as the polar ice cap melts.

    FUCK. OFF.

The European Union as a whole has no right to the Arctic. Piss off.

Norway and Denmark might but Finland and Sweden? Umm nope, unless of course the whole EU phrase of "what's something of somebody is everybody's". I agree, FUCK OFF or go to war because that is what it will come down to as soon as oil wells dry up. Anybody play Fallout 3? Great post-apocalyptic game concering resources and people going to war over them and the after affects.

Might get tougher for Canada unless Harper the panderer actually follows up on his promises, ahhh but that recession...

OMFG, don't they have more important issues to work on? Those guys are paid for by the taxpayer, and this is a complete non-issue!

I agree too... Fuck off!

I have to laugh when I read this.

The European Commission said the 27-member bloc, which has three member states in the polar region - Denmark, Finland and Sweden - should get involved in the current rush in the Arctic, notably in offshore oil and gas exploitation.

    What rush?

so far it's only Canada doing anything big in the arctic and were the only ones who will do anything there for awhile, those polar icecaps dont melt overnight. Some people must be falling for that "arctic is melting" line you see in the media all the time.

considering you have a 3 month window/year for exploration I cant see anyone ponying up the cash for exploration or development with oil prices as they are now.

Now gold and diamonds are another story and Canada has that sewn up.

When will countries learn to keep there greedy hands off of others. If the EU want's the Artic resources. They will have to trade for them, they simply cannot just say gimme gimme and recieve it.

    :)

if you look at a map, the EU has no coast to the North, only Norway.

Denmark MAY have something thru Greenland, but that needs survey work.

    just more posturing..

having said that, we do need to get our asses up there in a big way ..

For now. Just wait until the World Court rules that you have to share them with the EU.

And when the EU Navy eventually seizes Hans Island (it would be a good place to start asserting their authority) and starts staking out claims in the Canadian north just what are you going to do about it?

The CF-18s out of Bagotville can reach that far carrying harpoons and the Halifaxes are designed to operate in the stormy north atlantic.

I also have my secret plan zeta.

(skilled ninja attack ferrets ... shhh. Don't tell)

Too bad the Halifaxes can't deal with hitting anything bigger than an ice cube...while Denmark is building a series of small, well-armed destroyers that would be their equal. That and they have ice strengthened frigates that can actually patrol the Arctic for more than a couple of months in the summer. Coupled with an EU equipped with nuke subs, we sadly wouldn't have a chance if they really decided to move in force against us (not that I really see that happening).

    Danish Absalon class destroyers;

I'm not so sure the Halifaxes are so outmatched. Upgraded sparrows with an air defence computer to match coupled with improved Harpoons. I'm sure they can hold their own although they are obviously old equipment compared to vessels designed and built 10+ years later.

Its funny that Bart is talking about how the EU is a paper tiger ready to wilt at the first sign of russian aggression threatening their homes yet will flex its armed muscle against us over some mineral rights.

While the idea of armed conflict with any EU country I would say that our greatest strength would be our ability to retool and simply build alot of the equipment we need. We might not be able to fully blunt a first strike invasion into the arctic (winter or otherwise) unless they were willing to occupy a large swath of territory protecting those mining operations then they will never hold out against us when we can simply come at them from any of a thousand ways.

Imagine how good those ships would do if all we have to do is simply start flinging missiles at them on a regular basis from the air, the sea and just about any land point we can drive a LAV modified to fire a harpoon.

They simply wouldn't be able to hold any arctic territory agaisnt us determined to take it back.
