They can defuse roadside bombs and take out Taliban fighters but young Canadian soldiers can't seem to hang on to the big bonuses they earn risking their lives in Afghanistan.

I think the title is a wee bit sensationalized

Just like real life when I was single. I spent my money on booze and women........the rest I just wasted.

Often that means pouring cash down the drain at bars where the booze runs all night, or throwing money at Russian and Eastern European topless dancers or prostitutes in Cyprus's seedy cabaret bars.

Since the dawn of time soldiers have relaxed by renting whores and getting pissed.

What does the military have as an alternative? Showing re-runs of The Fifth Estate? 8O

Fifth Estate? That would knock me off my 14 year old wagon for sure!!

BTW folks it ain't 1700 bucks. It's foreign service pay + hazard pay + hardship pay + the whole tax free thing in risk zones 3 and 4 (not sure if that still exists, it did in 2004).

Now I can only speak for sailors, but even we could not blow that wad in a five day decompression stay.

We did have one gal spend every last extra cent she made on the 2004 trip to the Gulf, but that was in Dubai, a shopoholic's wet dream. Was talking to her a couple months ago, she figures she has enough stuff for at least five more Christmas.

You stole that from George Best!

The Star would sensationalise things? Try to make the troops look bad? Never! I'm shocked!

And for Regina, this is what George Best ( a very talented and famous Irish soccer player) said:

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

I gotta admit its a stupid story. For one its not like they are blowing through their life savings or cashing in savings bonds. All they are doing is what just about every young person would do. I certainly didn't save any money boozing it up travelling abroad.

These soldiers have full time jobs, full benefits, and a pension to live on if by some role of chance they retire without a penny to their names.

    bad star, bad.

My son had a new house built before leaving.
The bonus went towards black earth (the land where he built was sand) and sod.

He found it very hard going back after his 2 weeks break halfway through.
Even harder than when he first left.

Cyprus on October 16th, return here on the 22nd.

Tell him to stay out of the club called Rainbow, its not a gay club but it is owned by the Russian Mafia (like most places in Cyprus)

Sounds like the start a very good poem.
The problem is, not many words rhyme with Cyprus.

Hey Ray, it's a very nice spot. A bit dodgy but very nice. Your lad will have a good time there. Keo beer is quite good.
