While I agree that our borders should be protected with armed personell, the people the government chose to arm definately aren't those people.
If you want a couple of hours of entertainment, just go to a major border crossing and sit in the waiting room. I'll guarantee you'll be fascinated by the plethora of Rambo's, both sexes included, walking about in their flashy swat type uniforms, flexing their muscles, resting their palms on their sidearms and generally trying to look like they'll know what the fuck to do when the shit hits the fan.
Does anyone know if the Government in it's infinite wisdom gave these people a physciatric profile before they issued them guns?
The constable discharged his pistol twice into the moose's head, which brought the animal to a stop but did not kill it.
The Mountie "then requested that (the) CBSA intelligence officer ... euthanize the moose based on his known familiarity with livestock," says an official report into the incident.
The border services officer "discharged one round from his CBSA duty pistol into the head of the moose
So...let me get this straight...the RCMP officer shot the moose twice in the head, then was so perplexed that it was still alive, he needed the expertise of the CBA officer who had some "familiarity with livestock". And the CBA assisted by shooting the moose in the head a third time. Sounds like the two guys just took turns plugging a half-dead moose and then made up some shit about "familiarity with livestock" afterwards to make sure firearm discharge rules were covered.
Glad they did the humane thing though, just that their story sounds made-up.
Hmmmm...discharged two rounds from a "toy" into a moose, ask why the toy didn't kill it, then shoot it again with a toy..... I've always found that my 7mm Remington Mag, 270 Winchester or my old favorite, the 303 British does a much better job. Handguns.... (There are only a few caliber handguns in the world that even at close range stand much of a chance of killing anything much larger than a human, they're fun to shoot at paper targets, but thats about all.)

In Canada, we have 30 million citizens and only about a 300 murders by firearm. Our phsyciatric profile is sitting pretty good even if we dont check people for it.

Having once stood in a courtroom and given sworn testimony with several other witnesses that the accused actually did smoke one pound of pot personally during his month vacation, and they gave him a gun, and he will to this day ask WTF do they want ME to have a gun for, I've done the job for 25 years without one.... Having crossed the border several time as week as part of my work and noted along with most others that if there was a woman guard in your lane you quietly switched to another as they all had a propensity to act like Ilsa SheWolf of the SS, I see where you come from. This is Canada. We're laying off ditch diggers from Public Works, but need Border Guards and the union contract says... so here's your uniform and gun and the book of rules. Read it or you'll get three warnings and then paid suspensions if and when someone complains and we decide to pay attention....
First of all, if you don't have a passport, DON'T try to get into Canada! Not even when you are a moose!
Anywho... Knowing the border guards at small bordercrossings in BC... If he is twice as smart as the ones here, he is too stupid to carry a gun anyway. Cranky assholes who cant even say "hello", as opposed to the US guards, who are VERY friendly.
I have had problems with both US and Canada guards at small and large crossings. I remember a few years ago, getting into Canada was "what are you coming here for", "how long are you staying", ect. Then they have you open the windows, check your Drivers License and you were off. Now it is such a hassle...this year especially.
The worst was crossing Detroit/Windsor. Search the car, us, gave us an extremely hard time and almost didn't let us in all because we didn't have a hotel reservation
This summer I felt was going to be the same. We were crossing into Vancouver and they were wondering how a 18 and 19 year old drove from Chicago to Vancouver in 4 days and then planning on driving to Winnipeg in 4 days with a bunch of stops. We tried telling them "were good at traveling cheaply and are only doing the theme parks". But they couldn't comprehend it.
"You have the right to bear arms or arm bears, wahtever you want to do!"

I believe they get a psychiatric profile before they become border guards. Since they are considered Peace Officers.
