KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A secret U.S. plan to support anti-Taliban militias, which is raising concerns about further destabilizing Afghanistan, echoes similar ideas being voiced by the head of Canada's army.

    Why doesn't the U.S. ever learn? You do not support one militia to take out another. You just give free range for that other militia to take it's place. Thus is the history of U.S. doing this type of BS.

    .. because democracies have 4 year attention spans.
    This can work but in the long term, it's unsustainable because they can't keep paying them forever. I think McChrystal is resigned to not getting the troops he needs to doing the job properly.

    The single biggest problem democracies have, we are incapable of planning ahead of the next election. Instant gratification outweighs all consequences "Tax break now, even if it means we wont have enough money next year"
