I believe it was the American fans that had an issue with it. If I remember correctly, it was also because they didn't "get" the names, and around the time that "highlighting" the puck on the ice seemed like a wonderful idea as well.

That's actually a lot better than I thought from reading the title of the thread, I was expecting something like the Coca-Cola Stanley Cup...

God forbid that a Canadian sport be left with any trace of its Canadian ancestry after the yanks get their hands on it.

�James Norris (top defenceman) � Bobby Orr.

I think it makes far more sense for player's trophies to be named after players, not some guy who owned a hockey team.

Screw that, leave the trophy names alone and bring back the old divisional names also. Just because the yanks don't know who the Patrick brothers were shouldn't have any bearing on it. They should leave some of the tradition of the game alone.

I'm getting very tired of so many "traditions" being stripped away because some new kid on the block either doesn't understand it (in which case, LEARN it rather than change it to something your IQ can comprehend), or is offended by it.

Kinda like using the word "Holiday" instead of CHRISTMAS, or the cancelling of the national anthem at schools, so we don't offend our recent immigrants with our Canadian/Western traditions.

Precisely. I've had more than enough of that bullshit. The way I see it, if they don't like it, they can go back to their own country and THEN they won't have to hear it. As long as they're in mine.... they can STHU.

Yeah, but if you really want to remain true to genuine history then there's no way the MVP Award should be named after Conn Smythe. Asshole Of The Year, definitely, but not MVP.

What a crock of shit, what is this, change just for the sake of change....somebody has got too much time on their hands, next thing you know it's going to be the NAHL.....North American Hockey League....where does National come from with 2 countries competing? Of course, this is the 21st century and tradition means nothing at all these days. Leave the names as they are, when they add a new award category they can name them after whoever they want, as they've done with the "Rocket" Richard trophy for the player who scores the most goals.

They need a completely seperate and new trophy for D-men named after Mr Robert Gordon Orr, to be awarded to the top scoring D-man. I mean the have the Selke for the top Defensive forward, it only makes sense, award the Norris for the best DEFENSEman.
