TORONTO -- The short-eared owl and the Jefferson salamander are just two of the many species at risk in Ontario because the province lacks more than 1 billion trees, according to Trees Ontario.
"But we have long since passed the point where we can all sit back and expect our governments to solve these problems," Scott said.
Yeah, well, the rest of us have two things that you've never heard of Mr. Scott. They're called 1) jobs and 2) lives. The vast majority of us don't have the time to piss off and plant trees the entire year, and the provincial government doesn't have the cash to increase the number of tree planters ten fold. You can increase the number of planters by a factor of 100, but natural forest fires (lightning strikes) and disease will ensure that the billion tree mark will never be reached. Plus increasing the density of trees like that will just ensure forest fires are more intense and disease spreading will be increased. Sometimes having trees covering every square centimeter of land isn't the best policy.
Because every Conservative, present company excluded, is like Cyril Sneer from the Raccoons cartoon program from the 80s. Looking to destroy the forrest at every opportuninty, so long as a nickel could be made.

Well, it was mostly a rhetorical question. Manifest Destiny has more than demonstrated why he thinks that way.
Funny attitude coming from an outdoorsy guy who likes hunting, but sorting out conflicting emotions must be difficult for people suffering from such partisan bigotry.
Truth be told there are more trees now than there were when the Europeans arrived. But we are led to believe the oppisite. we are led to believe that the lumber companies want to strip the earth of all trees. Yeah that would be smart THEY WOULD BE OUT OF WORK! AND THEN CANT MAKE MONEY!
By the way Hunters conserve more land and wildlife habitat than any BS liberal audubon society!
I love the outdoors but dont lie to me and tell me its dissapearing!

I work in the outdoors, not a fair weather patron that goes out on the weekends. It is disappearing. Forestry companies are not out to strip the Earth, however they are also driven by the dollar. They want old growth and lots of it. Yes it will be replanted, but there is a net effect on the forests that see significant change and an eventual shrinkage. Don't forget about development on top of it all.
Try not to be so naive or partisan. Whichever it is today.
Sorry I meant 100 years ago. In fact, on Average 67% more grows back for each board foot cut. All Hardwood producing states are growth positive. The least being Texas and Minnesota with only 1% extra. With 65.8%, Massachusetts is the most. With all of the growth and sprawl we have now, how can it be that there are more trees growing today than there were 100 years ago? When the Europeans came to America, they cut down the forests for crops and grazing land. Almost 90% of early settlers were farmers. As the soil wore out, the people moved west

More liberal bullshit!
How is planting trees liberal bullshit?
Maybe individuals should help instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem.
Don't be so un-Canadian
Ok all kidding aside, that HAS become a real problem over the last 30 years or so.....and...and... it's all Harper's fault

BULLSHIT.
Truth be told there are more trees now than there were when the Europeans arrived.
I'd love to see some stats on that.
