What's next, calling the criminal Warrior societies, patriotic?? Riel was a criminal, charged and executed for treason against the Crown. Nowadays he wouldn't have been executed because he was out of his freaking tree crazy.

How is he any different from the fathers of the American revolution? He was 3 times elected to the House of Commons and the founder of Manitoba. Considering the way Native and Metis people were dealt with in those days, and that the government basically had an open and deliberate program of genocide, I doubt you would have done much different if you were in his positition...minus the delusions of divinity, maybe.

Agree. Riel was a seditious murderer. Plain and simple. No amount of revisionist nonsense will change that. Only the chronically historically ignorant would suggest otherwise.

Ya know,( and pardon me for being a little off topic here) when people used to say to me that Canadian history is boring, I used to tell 'em, "Well yer teacher must suck then."

And Riel is one of the many reasons it's not boring.

We're pretty well there already - look at how the OPP treats them. And all those deluded whities that think these are noble savages, in touch with the earth and all.

We do have to thank Riel for many things including making Canadian history interesting. I won't go as far as calling him a seditious murderer(hell, murder was common for everything back then anyway) he certainly was off his rocker and ultimately harmed his own cause. But we did get Manitoba out of the deal so it wasn't all bad.

    1) Peter Goldring is a walking disaster of a poltician, a loud-mouthed moron from the Reform party days who never ever learned the hows and whys of keeping his fucking mouth shut. Maybe a "condemnation" from the PMO is a little too harsh, but dunski Goldring shouldn't have said anything so dumb in the first place.

    2) Pat Martin's a douche for even suggesting that a court verdict, no matter from how long ago, should be overturned just so the NDP can score some cheap 'n' easy brownie points with Metis/Native voters in Manitoba. Riel might be a hero to them but he is also a historically-proven murderer, traitor, and insurrectionist. So screw Pat Martin and the Dippers. Next thing you know they'll be overturning history again to rehabilitate the public image of David Ahenakew just to suck up to the Natives even more than they do most of the rest of time.

Idiots abound on issues like this one. Ignore all of them and maybe they'll all finally go away some day.

    Lessons you learn from history:

If you're French, mentally ill(God talks to you), you rebel against British rule and you're executed by British authorities, you're automatically(rightly or wrongly) seen as a martyr. Two cases in point, Joan of Arc and Louis Riel.
