Canada's top soldier in Kandahar has been fined $3,500 for negligently firing two rounds with his assault rifle as his boss the chief of defence staff stood nearby.
The March 25 incident occurred as Menard and Gen. Walt Natynczyk, the chief of defence staff, were about to board a Blackhawk helicopter at Kandahar Airfield.
Menard, commander of Task Force Kandahar, struggled to load a magazine into his C8 assault rifle and put the safety on. His gun was at waist level, pointing at the runway, when it fired a two-round burst.
I didn't think generals walked around with C8's. A Sig Sauer would be more general-like.
When an investigation found no problem with Menard's weapon, he assembled about 300 troops to tell them about the incident.
If nothing was wrong with the weapon, and the weapon discharged, that means he must have had his finger on the trigger when he was loading the weapon. Looks like it's back to BOTC for the good general.
"BartSimpson" said That isn't done in the CF at any rank level for incidents such as this with similar results.
No offense - really - I am just used to a different outfit that demands weapons proficiency even from cooks and the guys who drive the septic trucks.
Even a civilian Gun Club insists that everybody be very proficient and ultra safety minded when handling weapons, a military organization should be at least that strict.

Good job on the $3,500 fine. Big enough to hurt.
He should have been busted down to Colonel just the same as any other troop would've been busted down a rank for the same offense.
Yes, It was only by the grace of God somebody didn't get hurt.
