Canada is losing hundreds of thousands of visitors from Mexico because of visa requirements imposed by the Harper government to curb refugee claims, Mexican President Felipe Calderon told the House of Commons on Thursday.
It may be true. I mean whats the cost of processing an easy refusal even once you factor in all the bureaucracy that ends up dealing with it in any manner? Times that by 9400 plus added cost of those cases that got to hearings and investigations. Add the cost of the claimants who dissapper before their hearing and live illegally here for the next 40 years until they die. At the very least we are not losing that much, if anything.
This reminds me of a time while overseas and working for CIC I had an official from a country I won't name riding me over dinner about "Why do you have visa requirements for us, we don't for you." I tried being diplomatic a number of times but he would not let up and was ruining my free meal (celebrating something I didn't care about) so I finally had to let it out and replied "Well I'm sorry if people actually want to stay in our country and Canadians don't want to stay in yours." Shut him up!!! Kept my mouth shut about my (past) job for the rest of my time over there.

Calderon acknowledged that Mexicans had abused Canada's refugee system and said he respects Canada's right to determine its own immigration system
But Arizona is 'racist' for doing the same thing.
If Canadian cops were stopping random Hispanic people on the street and demanding to see ID like they plan to in Arizona, then I'd be worried about abuses up here too. So far, our legislation is quite different from Arizona's. Don't think I won't be watching the government (no matter who is in office) to see if they try the same thing up here.

Thanks to your strict visa requirements (that Calderon is wanting you to relax) you don't have an illegal immigrant problem.
But let's say that, like Arizona, you had about 800,000 illegal aliens from Mexico in Canada.
Would it make sense to stop every person you see and ask them for their visa or would it make sense to ask Hispanics for their immigration status when they get arrested or stopped for any other offence? (FYI, Arizona is NOT proposing random, warrantless stops)
The issue parallels the matter of airline security. Should we search Norwegian grandmothers for bombs on the airplanes or should we just be honest and admit that the real problem lies with young, single, clean-shaven men who bow to Mecca five times a day?
