Nov. 11 should be a statutory holiday: Ottawa MPP

In Manitoba we call that Louis Riel day, and Rembrance Day isn't a stat here either.

It's an unpaid day off for most folks.

I'm gettin' double time for it.

As I damned well should if I have to miss out on the ceremony.

November 11 is the only day of the year which I refuse to work! I actually observe the current, as well as the past sacrifices made by others to keep my sorry ass safe and sound!

+1. Any company I work for knows that I will never work that day. (I've never heard of a company remaining open on Nov 11th in Alberta, outside of the service industry).

And since I spend the day at the Legion with my Comrades, November 12th is usually a write off too.

Even though it wasn't a stat holiday when I owned my business, everyone got it off with pay.

Nov 11 Seems to have become watered down to suit PC society more in this day and age (which isn't a bad thing).

My curriculum in the UK always emphasized that Remembrance Day is us paying tributes to the soldiers and civilians that were killed due to the German Empire's aggression.

Now it's become more broad term to commemorate all war sacrifices, which is ok. I guess North America has so many Germans, that honoring Remembrance Day for what it actually is seems a bit provocative.

I won't complain for another paid vacation day though. Although a cultural clarification of the holiday in Canada would be welcome.

I stand corrected and the website I found stating this is quite obviously wrong.

But. as an aside, I'd like to complement you on your attempt to equate Louis Real to Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day used to be a statutory holiday in Ontario. It was changed because kids weren't in school and most would just hang out. Very few attended any sort of Remembrance Day ceremony. By putting the kids back in school on November 11, they get an opportunity to be part of Remembrance Day ceremonies, meet veterans and learn something about our nation and its history. Frankly, that sort of apathy was common among adults as well. It was treated by most like any other day off work. I think Remembrance Day is better celebrated in Ontario now that it is not a statutory holiday. More people particpate in the day's events and while the kids may be a captive audience, that's better than letting them skateboard the day away.

And Riel was a lunatic shit-disturber who was rightfully hanged. Reverence for Riel is a shared failure; equal parts revisionist history and outright ignorance.
