The Royal Canadian Legion is mulling whether to launch a lawsuit if groups in Prince Edward Island and Ontario do not stop handing out white poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

Yeah, suing because some group is bring back an OLD tradition is rediculous.
The legion should be backing this effort, or asking them to join the legion if they are worried about losing fund raising.

The tradition was for War widows, not "Peace". Are the people handing the white poppies actually war widows? Doubt it. "Peace" is a moot subject to the war dead. War widows can be recognized in other ways, on other days.

The Poppy is a trademark, and Trademarks must be defended or they are lost. All we need is some bullshit 'Pink Poppies for Breast Cancer', where a penny from each actually make it toward breast cancer causes.

Every penny from poppies donations goes back into the community from which it came.

I dunno maybe I'm not getting it and please don't crucify me if I don't, but arn't all of you taking this poppy thing a way bit too seriously. Agreed its to remember the brave men who fell and for a good cause.

But all I see is these endless poppy threads here and most of them with cuss filled negativity ! AFAIK Its a rememberance of war dead and proceeds go to charity.

If it really is such a big movement people who really care will donate and honour the memories regardless, no matter how many colors poppes come out, get stolen etc etc.....

IMO whatever message or memory these are suppose to serve seems to be kinda getting lost with these meaningless squables. Well atleast looks like judging from these forums.

    Once again, sorry

The issue is about trade marks and supporting the legions. The idea of peace groups selling white poppies is competition for the legions. Traditional red poppies are a registered trade mark of the Legions. I agree with the legions.
I would only buy and wear red poppies and I put large poppie wreaths on my fathers, grandfathers and nephews graves. The legions are having difficulty financially and they need the revenue. Buy a red poppy!

That is the point a lot of good people died during that time period. The first time I went up to Ottawa I was impressed with the number of monuments to those who had fallen. I don't know the actual numbers but almost a whole generation of young men were wiped out. My country was involved from 1917 on. The Canadians were fighting since 1914.

andyt had a good idea and that is to wear both red and white. The Great War was to end all Wars. Peace was the objective. I don't think that the spirits of those who died would object at all.

People are passionate about it DD.

I once went from the middle of Sardinia to the south end of the island,
just to take some pictures of a WW2 cemetery there.
Planted a poppy, then rode all the way back across to the north end of Sardinia
in a single day with a straight piped Harley and being extremely hung over. :)

Most people oppose the white poppy because these people are trying to hijack
what should be a single event: to remember our fallen in the wars.
The white is trying to put a political spin on it, and it isnt appreciated.

They are also on sale here in The States on November 11. I always make it a point to buy one and wear it on November 11.

No one will skin you for asking DD.

You see it a just a plastic thing we wear on out lapel for a couple weeks a year. That's fair, considering you don't understand the emotion behind it.

It's what it represents; an entire generation of young men who died, sometimes upon threat of death. The choice was going over a wall that they were certain to be killed if they went over that wall, or getting shot by their Sargent for not going over the wall. If they don't go, they die, if they do go, they die. But they went anyhow, and many lived. So we wear the Poppy, and we spend 2 minutes a year to recognize what young men will do for God, King and country. And to thank them.

We use the poppy, because (as in the link I sent you) Red Poppies grew from the dirt that was soaked with their blood, and churned up dirt by cannon fire that became many of their their graves.

And anything that sullies that collective remembrance is most certainly not welcome.

600,000 served, 68,000 dead, 175,000 wounded, in a population of about 11 million.

Sorry, chum, but you don't exactly come from a part of the world known for taking sympbolism lightly. I'm surprised that you don't appreciate this.

    The meaning behind the symbolism.

Denigrating the red poppy by merely introducing a notion to compete with it is akin to my asking you to allow a Baptist church to be built in Mecca.

Maybe to the Baptists this is no big deal, but it is to you.

Likewise, the red poppy symbolizes the war dead and someone denigrating that symbol is, for many people, the same as desecrating the grave of a loved one.

Aha ! under all the fluff you still stay true to your troll roots. Anyways I'm not going to hijack this thread and turn into the usual mishmash, as people would find it disrepectful in a thread about something that really matters to them.

Another day, another time, another place

    Cheers 8)
