she does have a good point....those jockeying to scoop up the remains of Syria are hiding in the refugee camps and in other places far removed from conflict.

Nothing new there. Same with Afghanistan. The ex-pats, who missed the whole Taliban episode, come abck and have all the answers. What they find is that the people don't respect them because they left during the difficult time.
It's getting ugly over there. I have to admit I didn't think it would get this bad. Sounds like Assad is working up to a good ol' scorched earth campaign like his father.
it worked for his father and resulted in stability for almost forty years, a stability that saw the surviving religious extremists scurry back under their rocks. It allowed for the middle class to grow and for minorities and women to participate as 'equals' in Syrian society.
The Muslim Brotherhood, which is behind a lot of the unrest, operates like the big Drug cartels did, buy hospitals, rec centres in the areas they are imbedded in and they buy off the local populace. Should they persevere in this struggle, we're going to see a period of peace...sort of a false spring while the Brotherhood consolidates power in several formerly secular Arab states. It'll be a time to rearm and build. Within ten years, if it's even that long, the real real shit is going to hit the fan.

Yes, that's what makes it difficult. Here's Assad slaughtering children by the score. However, if he falls, whoever comes in behind him probably won't operate any differently. And, as you indicated, Islamist regimes reeplacing "secular" ones in several Muslim nations may exacerbate the problem down the road.
A brutal strongman isn't going to try and herald in the Day of Judgement by initiating Armageddon.....the Muslims believe in the whole Jesus versus the Anti Christ battle of Armageddon....a slightly different one than what the Book of Revelations depicts.... but only slightly.

Agreed. Still hard to watch rooms full of ventilated children though.
My only advice to her is get the hell out of Syria...ASAP
Somebody just got a rude awakening.
Im sure when she runs out of cash Canada will take her back like one of our own.
We'll send a frigate.
Somebody just got a rude awakening.
Har har....
After reading the story I'm kind of hoping she gets back safe.

I do as well. However, let's not ignore the obvious. A woman tried to roll in and tell a number of old school Muslims how it ought to be done.

Brutal strongman or religious wingnut.
