United Nations officials say they are concerned that vulnerable Canadian children may be falling through the cracks in a fractious federal system that lacks accountability and a clear strategy.
Letting children starve to death due to inaction? It's not just the UN that's guilty of that, it's also Dr Caleb. And Zipperfish. After all, could we not, right now, be out there trying to feed starving children? Wouldn't that be a morally righteous use of our time than typing on here. And yet here we are...

I donate quite a bit of money to organizations that do exactly that. I'd be crappy at feeding starving children, whereas, they'd be crappy at posting on CKA.

As do I. But as far as "action" goes, that acounts for--what?--a couple of hours a year. Considering the scale of the problem, we're not really doing much are we? While we, by their standards, live like Roman emperors, throwing away an estimated 40% of our food.
Just saying it's always easy to point the finger at someone else to relieve oneself of the burden of moral responsibility.

Fair enough Zip, but I don't believe I was shirking my responsibilites by pointing out that the UN isn't one to talk when it comes to the treatment of children. I know Canada has a long way to go. I'm still kind of bitter about the 1990 promise that child poverty in Canada would be eliminated by the year 2000.
And to also be fair, you don't know what I do when I'm not posting here.
"FieryVulpine" said Yep, the same impotent UN that let atrocities happen in Durfur and Syria. Many of them children.
And what have you done lately to help the children of Syria? Are you posting from Damascus? Didn't think so. So why do you excuse your own inaction, but not that of the UN's?
And I should follow up wiht a story, to point out that I'm not trying to put Caleb or FieryVulva on the spot:
When I first got to Afghanistan, we'd of course be accosted by all manner of beggers and serfs whenever we wandered into Kabul. Having little kids myself, I was particularly susceptible to the malnourished, shoeless kids working long hours to sell their trinkets. So I paid an exorbitant sum of money to a tiny little girl selling scarves. My buddy, who was on his 8th or so deployment told me to ignore her, but I said that I couldn't just walk by and not act.
Well sure enough, twenty paces later, my buddy tells me to turn around and there's the little girl on the ground crying and a bigger kid running off with the $5 I gave her.
So while I thought my buddy was just callous from years of being surrounded by poverty, he himslef had learned the same lesson the hard way. It ain't as easy as showering money on the poor. It's hard to fix this.
Like the UN or the US for that matter: Sometimes it's just damened if you do and damned if you don't.

I had a similar experience in a little burg called Alamo (the Texans love the place). Gave an emaciated kid an MRE and right in front of me some POS stole it from him and took off running. The POS shortly explained himself to allah and I learned that when you feed a kid over there you pull out your sidearm, open the MRE, and have the kid eat it in front of you. The kids are so hungry and so freaking traumatized that they don't even notice you covering them while they eat.
Yet the UN has the time to criticize Canada while there's a morally bankrupt culture in Afg that they totally ignore. A fact that underlines the uselessness and futility of the UN.
Well, I put Inbred on my ignore list because he does not have anything worth listening to, so why should I give a damn about what he has to contribute to the conversation? I will just go on ignoring after this sentence.
Anyway, in response to Bart's comment, that is because a morally bankrupt culture at the UN itself. When you look at how much of the third world is run by strongmen or tyrannical oligarchs, the UN is little more than a dictator's club where these buffoons condemn the world's liberal democracies. Then there is the fact that the West is a soft target because these dictators would laugh at the UN because the organization has no teeth to speak of. I mean, their record in Syria should speak for itself.
New headline: Canada confronts UN on letting children starve and die due to it's inaction.
Much better headline Doc.

So it's Dr. C who's responsible for driving up global corn prices!
