In Aachen (Aix-La-Chappelle), Germany where I lived the synagogue in the centre was under 24/7 police guard. According to my German colleagues it was not due to neo-nazis as it may have been in the 70s, but rather now it was due to radical Islamists. Indeed, the area around my apartment, with the full-body coverings and male religious dress/beards had more a feel to Riyadh than to Charlemagne's Throne City.
