Vancouver traffic congestion the worst in North America: survey

Having lived in Vancouver I disagree, sure there were certain areas at certain times it was congested but it's nothing like Edmonton who has the worst drivers and the worst traffic congestion in Western Canada.

Having driven in many cities during local rush hours, Edmonton is not too bad. I found the drivers in Vancouver more likely to approach on the right and pass you in a turning lane. I've found the drivers in Montreal likely to try to kill you with their cars and then give you the finger for getting in the way. Winnipeg traffic signs make no sense at all, you can have a red light, yellow light and green arrow all at the same time. WTF?

And I am still in therapy over getting on the 401/427 interchange in Toronto at rush hour. 8 lanes of 'ohmygod ohmygod . . .'.

Confusion corner?

Edmonton's a walk in the park compared to Calgary, and at least you guys up there knew how to get a ring road built. I'd rather drive Hwy 63 back and forth from Fort McFuckStick every day of the rest of my career than ever get stuck on Deerfoot in rush hour ever again. Fuckin' eight hour drive from Weyburn SK yesterday and I didn't get pissed off even once until I got back to Calgary. Grrrr!

Yeah, I'd say Edmonton is pretty tame compared the Calgary or Vancouver, where everyone seems to be doing 30 or 40 over the posted speed limit, with many of them driving pretty aggressively too.

When I drove in Toronto this spring, I loved to 401 - once I got the hang of the Express/Connector thing, it was a dream to drive. Sure, a lot of people speed too much, but the drivers didn't seem as aggressive/dangerous as the drivers here in Alberta. Montreal was blase' compared to Toronto IMHO - i must have been there on a good day!

Yeah, the province was smart enough to build it too close to the Enoch reserve (and they built that part first in the mid-90s too). Most of it has been done with P3P and it's been largely built on time and close to budget.

I was driving some visiting relatives from Regina on the 400 once and had to cross 5 lanes in quick succession (which I did legally, one at a time, signalling and looking each lane). Their eyes were bugging out: "I've never had to do that in my life!"

Vancouver ... were really late in the game building real highways. There still isn't much capacity, there. Back in the 60's, 70's, 80's the attitude seemed to be "If we build highways, lots of people will come here to live and we'll lose our nice little, perfect city." Well, they came anyway, without the highways and now Vancouver is a big city with a small city highway system.

Edmonton's not bad. Calgary and Vancouver suffer from the "war on the car" which must have festered over from Liberal city halls.

4.5 million people live in the metro area and you can drive through the center of the city at 70 miles an hour during rush hour...Freeways baby!

Canada needs to build some damn freeways not bike lanes.

I have driven in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and through Edmonton;
Whitehorse to Saint John, and just about everything in between.


Nothing, and I do mean nothing, compares to the idiocy in Italia.

It's funny, normally the eye ties are fairly friendly people, but for some reason
whenever they get into a car they turn into the biggest pack of assholes on the planet.


Vancouver ain't driving, it's parking with occaisonal movement.

Well, the article is about driving in North America, but if you want to go international, try driving in Asia. The 'driving regulations' there are really just suggestions rather than rules.

Europe, while crazier than most places in North America, was nothing compared to near total anarchy I've seen in Asia. I'm sure there are plenty of places round the world where it's just as crazy - or crazier.

My best friend has visited Tehran a few times. Shows me pics of 5 car wide traffic on 2 lane streets.

In Afghanistan, in order to prepare for the chaos on the roads in Kabul they would ask the potential drivers if they've ever driven in Rome. Apparently that was the only thing that could compare.

Know what Vancouver needs? More HOV lanes no one can legally use.
