Prime Minister Stephen Harper also acknowledged Matheson's death on Twitter Sunday evening. "Canada has lost a great public servant," Harper said. "John R. Matheson played key roles in both the creation of the (Canadian) flag and the Order of Canada."

What a brilliant graphics artist ... politics of the flag selection process aside. That stylized sugar maple is exactly the sort of "logo" that out country needed in the 1960's and it has served us well. The Maple Leaf as a symbol of Canada is much older but this particular version showed us to be modern ... even futuristic in our outlook. We still have that great future ahead of us in spite of ourselves.

How cool is that? You see it so often, you probably can't judge anymore.

BTW, this particular image is a plot from an AutoCad drawing ... not an "official" rendering.

RIP. I love the leaf (even have a tattoo of it) but I always thought the bands (is that the correct term?) should have been blue. They'd represent the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans that bound our nation and our flag wouldn't so resemble a goddamn Liberal party campaign sign. :D

My VERY TORY parents were on the other side of the battle and I love the Union Jack and all but, you know ... this symbol is very special. Forget about how it was born. It is practically unique on the planet ... totally so for an advanced nation. There is no bombast, (obvious) heraldry, no eagle (which sets it aside form dozens of national flags). It is very ...cool.

Everywhere I have been on this planet, everyone immediately recognizes and knows
    that flag.
    Good one to have. :)

RIP John Matheson, and thank you.

    RIP

You read about the massive fights to design the flag, what to include, who to placate, and so on. And yet, I can't imagine Canada with any other flag. A proper legacy indeed.

R.I.P. Mr. Matheson, father to the most unique flag in all the world, the Maple Leaf.

Long may it wave, and grace our own,
    Blue skies and stormy weather,
Within my heart, above my home,
    The Maple Leaf forever!

"It was basic heraldry. White and red is considered the most powerful combination in heraldry. That's why the Canadian flag has the brightest red. And the starkest white. It had to be that way," Matheson said in an interview in June.

Damned straight - no need for blue on it anywhere!

    RIP Mr. Matheson

Great flag, it just shouts Canada.

    RIP John Ross.
