It's not so bad. They were arrested filming riots in Egypt when the police were shooting protesters. The cameraman was convicted of weapons offenses because he picked up a shell casing at the scene. A severe lack of evidence, yet they were still tried and convicted.

Since he had to renounce his Egyptian citizenship it'd be my guess that he won't be accorded the same privileges and protection in the middle east as a Canadian that he was as an Egyptian.
So, his usefulness to Al Jazeera has probably dropped considerably since there are a myriad of countries he won't be granted access to or information from and unless their network starts covering women's field hockey his usefulness to them is pretty much done.
