Police chief Niclas Hallgren said they had based their conclusion on what was found at the killer's apartment and "his behaviour during the act".
Media reports suggest the 21-year-old attacker had far-right sympathies.
Armed with a sword and wearing a helmet and mask, he stormed a school in Trollhattan, near Gothenburg, before being shot dead by police.
Police found a suicide note revealing that the attacker had meant to target "foreigners" and believed "Sweden should not take in so many immigrants", Swedish TV reported.
But investigators believe he acted alone and there was no indication of any group involvement, Aftonbladet newspaper reports.

As for the "Europeans waking up" thing... well maybe they are. Or maybe some of them think that they are or that they need to. If we are going to look at root casuse when it comes to islamic terrorism, and we should, then we need to give just as much consideration to looking for root causes when things like this happen.
Understanding that some europeans are feeling threatened in their own countries is not the same as agreeing that they have reason to, nor is it condoning violent responses to that perceived threat. But automatically screaming "racism" and talking about those evil reactionaries does no more to understand or solve the problem than screaming about islam being "evil" does to solve the problem of islamic terrorism.
If you call this terrorism, then it's also racism, as it was directed at the ethnicity and or religion of the victims. (unless you want to weasel about religious bigotry not being racism). So I'm not really sure what you are driving at with your last sentence.
But the screaming about Islam being evil is what promotes the atmosphere in which this sort of crime is perpetrated.
Since we don't have much info I'm just making a few assumptions. If the attack was motivated by his feelings about immigration then it's a politically motivated crime, hence terrorism. Depending on one's particular bias the opposing tribes will generally argue that it's mental illness rather than terrorism. I was saying it can be both.
Generally though, when white people commit acts like this the left likes to just cry racism and leave it at that, rather than looking at the actual causes, and do just the opposite in cases of islamic terrorism. Righties, of course, tend to do the same things in the other direction.

I wonder though in terms of numbers how these two deaths match up against the number of native Swedes that have been murdered/assaulted/raped by Muslim 'immigrants' over the last couple of decades, a number that's been deliberately suppressed by the Swedish government and the European mainstream press. I'd wager the number of the latter is a lot greater than the number of the former.

In the study, immigrants were found to be four times more likely to be investigated for lethal violence and robbery than ethnic Swedes. In addition, immigrants were three times more likely to be investigated for violent assault, and five times more likely to be investigated for sex crimes. Overall, North Africa and Western Asia were strongly overrepresented in the crime statistics.

The difference is how much crime. Unassimilated immigrants and their descendants commit a massively disproportionate degree of crime in Europe, especially violent crimes. When native citizens see such huge increases in crime they have good reason to be concerned and even angry. Unfortunately the politicians in Sweden have taken PC to such a ridiculous extreme that many of the citizens are left feeling that no one cares about their concerns. Which, obviously, leads to heated rhetoric about taking things into their own hands. And to extreme anti-immigrant parties gaining strength.

Well, they generally aren't Jews. Or Christians. Or Chinese. Or Latinos. Or Hindus. Or Sikhs. All in all they're usually the ones that ruin every place they set foot in and destroy in a couple of generations what took much better people from a much better civilization centuries to build. And for some reason they're also the ones that liberals everywhere want to admit more of because something something, something something something, said liberals think is real instead of just one of their crazy rainbows and lollipops fantasies of all cultures being equal.
