Reaction on social media to B.C. singer Nelly Furtado's unconventional rendition of O Canada at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night was swift and harsh.

She butchered "O Canada" nearly as badly as most American "pop" singers butcher their Star Spangled Banner. I wouldn't ask for a repeat performance....

Wasn't as bad as I feared. That said, I wish celebrities would just stick to the more traditional rendition of National Anthems. This type of song isn't about them, it's about something more important than them.

Yeah, it could have been worse, but I agree, leave the artistic rendition at home and sing it as it was meant to be sung...

Almost as bad a job as Nikki Yanofsky did to the Anthem at the Winter Olympics in 2010. Then when she was asked why she did what she did, she claimed artistic license to make the song "her own".

Celebrities should never be allowed to sing National Anthems period, singers or not. Just ask the morons who hired Rosanne Barr to sing the American one at a Padres game in 90 and for the record I can still hear an obviously intoxicated Robert Goulet destroying the Star Spangled Banner at the second Ali/Liston fight . ROTFL

This wouldn't be a problem if you just used God Save the Queen.

Anthems don't belong at sporting events anyway.

"Anthems don't belong at sporting events anyway."

I'm sure it will be considered sacrilegious* but I think nationalism itself shouldn't be involved in sport.

*I always want to spell that word sac-religious.

Sorry but this can not be as bad as Tattoo-Girl and her friends giving me a drunken rendition of O' Canada a couple winter Olympics ago. Canada's Women team and just beaten the USA women's team and I had called to congratulate her. Freaking funniest thing I ever heard while standing outside of a Denny's.

Some people apparently think if you cheer for the home team you risk turning into Hitler or something. First step cheering for the women's soccer team, next step beating up Syrian refugees arriving at the airport. :|
